There is yet no other NLE that does anything similar right on the timeline.Smoke 2013 does it. However it costs 10x the amount of FCP X (a three year Edumacation License is free though).

Claus replied to the topic 'I hate this new FCP...why?' in the forum.Oh, and thanks to the hints about the Holy Cow. I don't peruse their forum, but their CS6 tutorials are great... and I have been wondering all along why there is so few stuff about FCP X in their library.

Claus replied to the topic 'Steadicam or FCP stabilization?' in the forum.Ever thought of a monopod? For my palm recorder I use one that cost around fifty bucks (Trailblazer and small Manfrotto head). I even use it as a stabilizer - extend the pod, so it balances the camera and loosen the head screw, then just make a ring with your thumb and forefinger and hold the rig at the head. Not as good as a Merlin, but it does the trick.
I got pretty mixed results from FCP X stabilization. However, I needed it only a couple of times, so it might also be a lack of experience.

Claus replied to the topic 'Documentary footage to be edited in FCPX' in the forum. You know anyone with a consumer DV camcorder with a dubbing function - VHS > camera (RCA) > Mac (Firewire). That way you can capture directly to DV PAL. No generation loss with MPEG Streamclip.

Claus replied to the topic 'FCPX Apple on NAB or?' in the forum.Absolutely, Tom. In my former life, I walked off enough shoes at trade fairs and expos. What did I get out of it? A bunch of plastic bags filled with brochures and goodies (I can't remember how many key hangers, forklift and truck models I have given to my sister's kids). Those fairs were great to build up connections or relationships though.
However, twenty years later, we have the Internet. Sure, you can't touch things in the web, but you get better information from there.
On topic: Apple has people like Larry Jordan, Ben, Tom, Steve and Mark. They don't get paid by Apple, but I think they do much better PR than any sales team could. I'd rather listen to folks who use something in a real world environment than to a sales dude who could sell software/computers today and soap tomorrow. I prefer experience over sales pitch.
Why are some of you folks afraid to confess that you use FCP X? Well, I don't work in a highly professional environment like you guys, but, so far, I haven't met any editor (in my small world) who wasn't impressed with it. Some of them switched over completely ...at least for the editing part. We rely still a lot on optical disks, so we need the Adobe suite on the side. FCP X + Resolve + Audition + Encore is, for us, a killer combination.

I am intrigued by MFT and have a bunch of Digital Zuikos from my Olympus still cam. Wanted to go with a GH3, but now I think I wait a bit.

Claus replied to the topic '10.08 released!!' in the forum. Thanks for the clarification, Ben. However, I have the feeling that, with FCP X, we are confronted with the taste of a new generation. While I agree with you that training is important, this new generation doesn't have any interest in it. I know a lot of "aspiring filmmakers" who don't have the slightest clue of the photographic background of video, and I'd assume that stretches to the editing portion.
Those snotnosed YouTube gurus who got an iMac for Christmas and pirate FCP to have their first tutorial up at New Years Eve seem to be standard way of learning nowadays. Spend money on a training from you or Ripple? Heck, the internet is free!

Claus replied to the topic '10.08 released!!' in the forum.I remember an interview in which was mentioned that Jobs wanted to have the original FCP as a giveaway with PowerMacs - kinda lIke iMovie in the "consumer" Macs.
The supplied software, and the price for the "pro" apps have always been a strong selling point for Apple's hardware IMHO.

Claus replied to the topic '10.08 released!!' in the forum. If they were to release 10.1 next week, they hadn't brought .0.8 this week.
If you are always afraid to buy something, because it might be obsolete next week, you never could buy anything.
Can't tell you about ML. I use Resolve.
