Be aware, however, that there is an issue with Multicam audio. Even if you're only cutting picture and using a single audio source- I've found that while unmodified audio is fine as plays as though there aren't cuts [which there shouldn't be], if you apply any enhancement effects to the audio, you will occasionally hear "bumps" thru some cuts. Whether you try to apply these effects to elements within the multicam clip, or to the multicam clip in your project sequence, these audio pops still occur.

The only way I've found to solve this is once your video is done, to compound the multicam clip and then apply any audio effects to that.

    Definitely needs to be fixed.

Film school can be very valuable- for everything BUT the degree, which for people in our industry is a useless bit of paper I wasn't even willing to pay the $100 Ryerson wanted to charge me for it when I graduated in the mid 1990's.

The first benefit is that you are forced to produce- deadlines on many projects a year. This forces you to not be too precious about every film. Come up with an idea. Shoot it. Edit it. Deliver it. Make your mistakes and move on. This is the biggest reason some people never get anything done. They can't set their own deadlines and stick to them.

The second benefit is networking with your classmates. I still hire, work with, and work for so many of the people that I spent that 4 years with. Great people who are now professionals in all areas of the industry and at all levels. Some of which are well out of my budget range!

I'm sure there are ways to get both of these advantages without going to film school for 4 years- probably cheaper too! But I don't regret it at all. Of course, I went right out of high school at 19, so I had the time and energy to do a 4 year program.

Of course, absolutely NONE of the technical knowledge I learned in school helped me at at. At at that time film school was still FILM school. In the 4 years I went there, there was a massive technological upheaval across the entire industry. From film editing- to A/B tape editing- to the early digital systems.

    Man, what a ride...

I don't think you need Motion5. My understanding is that (at least in part) Motion is built into FCPX. Obviously you need Motion to build or modify templates beyond the rigged parameters. But not to use them.

I don't think they handed them back. There's still features and functionality that people are looking for in FCPX that are at the very least months away...

But I am gratified that this has made people a bit more realistic about Adobe, and that they're not some sacred cow. I think it's balanced the conversation, because things were VERY anti-Apple/pro-Adobe for a while there...

It would be nice to see Adobe do more targeted packages. Though the truth is that if they came out with a video package, it would still include things I didn't need as well as omit thing I did, which would ultimately end up pushing people to the full CC subscription.

On the large subtitling job I've been working on, in my testing I was never happy with the results i got using the Outline to draw a stroke around the text. I ended up using a black Glow. You can tweak the blur and size setting to get a solid line that I found looked more stable than the outline. The only difference is that Glow gives you slightly rounded corners to the text stroke.

    Maybe this will help.

It always comes up in discussions with pessimists about Apple that making an NLE has no impact on their bottom line and ending it would make no difference to their business whatsoever.

Well, this argument only makes sense if Apple as a company only does things for sheer profit. And as any idiot analyst has said over the last 10 years, Apple has left a lot of opportunities behind by NOT doing the obvious thing, like selling a cheap computer, or licensing their OS to 3rd party hardware. Things that certainly could have increased their marketshare in the short term, but in the long term would harm the brand.

Even relative insiders I know don't know WHY Apple continues with the Pro Software that it does. They only know that the team is truly dedicated to the products. 10 years ago, Apple probably developed their Pro software to avoid getting their legs cut out from under them if AVID or Adobe decided to abandon the platform. Creatives where the last and strongest user base for Apple hardware in it's darkest days.

Today, perhaps Apple Pro apps are part of a larger initiative meant to transform filmmaking from both the production AND distribution side [independent movies released via future AppleTVs?].

But while on one side, you could argue that because Apple business doesn't depend on FCPX sales, that it's users shouldn't depend on any commitment from the company. The flip side is what we have seen, which is a willingness to take chances and make bold changes. 5 years down the road the short term stumbles will be forgotten if a powerful next-generation tool is the result.

That's a really remarkable thing to consider- some companies walking away from Adobe. But honestly, they have stood without any realistic competition in certain sectors for almost 2 decades. Small, competing products like PixelMator and Acorn have growing feature-sets which I think in another few revisions will meet the needs of a great deal of people who previous HAD to buy Photoshop & Illustrator.

I think we're going to look back 6 years from now at this decade and be amazed at just how things have shifted. It's literally impossible for me to imagine where things like content creation and content delivery are going to end up. We could make giant leaps forward, as competing companies move into each-others businesses, or we could be stifled by the legacy companies who refuse to tamper with 50 year old revenue models.

  • I've been seeing this error myself a few times recently.

Quit FCPX. Relaunch and then delete all Project render files. Now re-export. This has solved it for me.

I'm working on a very large subtitling job in X and have seen no reduction in quality- and I would on my broadcast monitor.

How are you generating the subtitles? Text layer with what? Outline? Glow? Drop Shadow?

  • My experience with the scenes that come with the Alpha is that the openGL performance is pretty good. It's not quite as nice as Element3D, but miles ahead of the native Extruded Text in AE CS6.

  • more great updates to the mExtrude Alpha from MotionVFX. Now in this version- reflection maps!

    BIiOhp0CQAA9XBC.png:large

For anyone who has a need for it, I'd say you could probably be using this on real jobs at this point.

Interesting to note that these object interact fully with scene lighting, cast and receive shadows, and self-shadow. AND are reflected by surface planes in Motion.

It really does make me believe there's lots of untapped power under the hood of Motion that hasn't been brought to bear yet.
