It wouldn't be 40GB. It will either be 64 or 128.

It should be noted this was a single CPU 12core processor. Does lend some weight to the idea that this will be a single CPU machine, but it's impossible to say for sure if there will be any dual processor configurations. If there were dual-CPUs available, then Apple would have said up to 18 cores at least (2x8core processors).

Even if this is the case, it won't affect my purchase. CPU performance isn't nearly as important to my workflow anymore. GPU and drive speed is much more critical to me.

  • Doing your research- reading reviews and looking at examples. And emailing the developer to make sure that functionality you need is there; this is all the responsibility of you as the consumer.

The rush of plug-ins available for FCPX was made them tempting at first- but quickly you realize what plugins meet your needs and abilities.

That said, I'd be all for a FCPX plugin review website. It's a growing business- and it can be a crowded and confusing marketplace.

An interesting side note for those who are dreading the expense of 4K monitoring.

While the news from Sony about their 2 4K TV options (priced at 5 and 7 thousand respectively) at least beings them into the realm of mere mortals: the shocking news is that you can buy a 50" 4K TV on Amazon right now for under $1,000.

    www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE50UY04-50...-120Hz/dp/B00BXF7I9M

While I wouldn't trust this brand for colour accurate monitoring, it's heartening to know that when the new MacPro does come out, there will be a 1:1 pixel display available at a highly affordable price.

Finally on the display front, it will be interesting to see if Apple provides a Retina Cinema Display option to go with the MacPro. If the current CD goes for $999, I'd guess a Retina CD could be in the neighbourhood of $1,999 to $2,999. I say this thinking back to the premium price of the old 30" ACD.

As a bonus- I suppose we could also see a 4K ready h.265 ready aTV.

Yes. Motion's interface was updated to be in line with FCPX- so though features could be added to Motion, if you know this interface I think you'll be prepared for any updates to come.

Also- I wouldn't expect any more demos. Apple sneak peaked the MacPro at WWDC because its the only event where it makes sense to show off this kind of machine. Apples fall events are more consumer focused, so I can't see giving any stage time to the MacPro at an iPhone or iPad centric event. And certainly nothing FCPX related.

Though I appreciate the UI refinements, the big takeaway for me was the greatly enhanced multi-display support. 2 displays PLUS an appleTV? Yikes!

Hopefully to go along with this there will be expanded FCPX options for multi-display layouts.

The only opinion I'm interested in is from those who've used it.

And the comments from the guys at Blackmagic, The Foundry, and Pixar have been nothing but extremely positive. I'll take that perspective over the hordes of message-board posters.

This MacPro and a nice fat FCPX (and hopefully Motion and Logic) update this year are going to make me very happy.

  • motionVFX has just released a new Alpha that includes OBJ import. The trial download comes with a scene including an iPhone. The performance is butter-smooth- I could be working with a still image of an iPhone for all I knew. There's loads for work left to be done
, but it's hilariously promising- and I'm anxious to see how performance holds up with higher polygon models.

Only coincidentally. If Apple isn't going to tailor it's release schedule to have something to show at NAB, then they certainly aren't going to make a point of trying to "compete" with the launch of CC. Apple has always stuck to it's own release schedules for hardware and software, and I expect this to continue.

That said. Next week will be 3 months since 10.0.8 was released. So a 10.0.9 is theoretically possible anytime from here forward. And we've had two maintenance updates in a row since last October- so there's been lots of time for development of new features and functionality.

Ben has said before that that is their general guide, and the release schedule up to now largely bears that out. Only 2 of the 8 updates has been significantly longer than 90 days: 10.0.6 [134] and 10.0.8 [112].

In other update news. During the MacPro introduction at the keynote, Phil Schiller mentioned that FCPX would be updated to co-inside with the MacPro release, to optimize performance. And on Apple's website:

    screenshot2013-06-11at2.27.51pm.png

This has led several people to theorize on the COW that we won't see another update until the MacPro launches later this year [Oct-Nov?]. I find that a bit tough to swallow, considering that would be 7 months since 10.0.8, and pretty much a year since the late big feature update with 10.0.6 last October.

Personally, I'm inclined to this we'll see a feature update next and not too long from now, then when the MacPro is launched, a maintenance update with the 4K and GPU support that the MacPro requires. That would be in keeping with how they handled the Retina support in 10.0.5.

Well that's what it cost. I have the Lease bills to prove it. Slightly over 10K with Tax.

The Kona Card was $2,500. The tablet was probably a grand. And the monitor had to be $1,700 at the time. That leaves less than 5K for the machine itself. And you could absolutely configure a MacPro to be 5 grand in 2006.

I'd be incredibly surprised if we had to wait for the Sept/Oct launch of the MacPro for an update to FCPX.

One paragraphs on the MacPro page states that,
Not only does it feature a state-of-the-art AMD FirePro workstation-class GPU with up to 6GB of dedicated VRAM — it features two of them. With all that power, you’ll be able to do things like seamlessly edit full-resolution 4K video while simultaneously rendering effects in the background — and still have enough power to connect up to three high-resolution 4K displays.

Sounds like true background rendering is coming to FCPX.

I'm not much one for internet memes, but I think the crowd would be howling if they introduced OSX 10.9 "Grumpy Cat".

At WWDC? I admire your optimism, guys... but it's OSX. The banners are for the two products they've already said were going to be in the keynote. iOS7 and OSX.

Meh. I still can't see around the need for PCIe before TB become fast enough for the heavier-lifting cards. I agree that modular design cold work, but TB can't be that connector yet as far as I can tell.

I don't think anyone really knows what's happening. So few people's hands are on this, there's bound to be way less people "in the know" than on the average Apple product.

I agree. Normally they wouldn't poison the well by announcing a new machine, and risk a drop off in sales of the one they're still selling.

However, the sales on the MacPro are already low, and with the rumoured refresh known by just about everyone who plans to buy one at this point- I think the sales they'd loose in a preannouncement would be minimal vs the goodwill having details and a ship date would garner.
