I'm starting a sports recruitment video company for local high school athletes. I have experience shooting for a local network that was a division of Cablevision ( for anyone in the Tri-State area... MSG Varsity.) Besides my Facebook page updates asking people to spread the work while showing of my website and work, can someone give me some good suggestions on how to market a brand and establish clients?

I've starting compiling info for the local school in my county and sending out an email to anyone listed from their athletic department to let their athletes know about our services. Besides just showing up and local games/arenas/schools/gyms, I'm not sure how else to establish myself so that the community know of my services.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

That's exactly what I did and I just sent the drive back out. Hopefully it comes back in working condition this time!

Hey guys, so I re-formatted the drive last night before I saw some of these suggestions. Good news is the drive works fine, bad news it obviously all the footage has been deleted. I tried to do a "repair" in disk utility, but I got a message saying the drive needed to be re-formatted.

The drive was mine to begin with, somehow they didn't have any portable drives.... seems odd. They must of done something weird/incorrect when formatting because it works fine for me now that I formatted it back to the way I had it before I sent it out to them. I explained everything I tried and informed the studio they need to send me a drive with the footage.

Unfortunately I can't just walk away from the jobs...need the money. Though these people are not the greatest to work with. They had my drive for a month making excuses about why they didn't send it out. Coupled with the formatting mess they gave me, it was all a waste of time and don't want to re-send them my drive as I'd bet it will just be the same circle of issues.

I did create a disk image, though I couldn't see anything because I couldn't mount it before reformatting so I doubt anything will be in the image.

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

Thanks, I wanted to be sure before I tried. I don't know what they did to this drive, because I've tried it on 3 different PC's as well and nothing will mount it.

I have a WD usb3 drive that a studio said they reformatted to exfat so it could be used on PC's as well. They said they could not transfer all of the footage due to it being formatted for Mac. Now my drive won't mount to my Mac at all. I can see it I'm disk utility but nothing happening when I hit mount. If I repair the disk will I delete everything off the drive? Besides finding a PC to transfer the files to does anyone have any good ideas?

But is a DSLR ideal for sports shooting with its size/time limitations?

Thanks for the Nikon suggestion, though I'm looking at getting a camera for Videography purpossess, not for photography.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! The Song PXW-X70 definately seems to be the most interesting one. I have a higher end Canon Xixia as my only camera at the moment for vacations and stuff so I was looking for something a little outside the some of the similar type cameras suggested.

I've also been looking at the Canon XA20, anyone have experience with that one?

I was looking for any suggestions for a good, hopefully not super expensive camera for shooting sports highlights. Traditional cameras, like my older SONY HDR-FX7 where my got to... yes I know it was HDV. DSLR's aren't really for this type of shooting, at least that's what it seems to me, but I really like the idea of the Black Magic Cinema Camera. I'm thinking that would prove very difficult for sports though.

Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

These are definately things to consider as well instead of alwaya cutting to the beat. Making it more story/narative driven. My work is prodominately weddings, so I'll need to start thinking more about this on my next edit.

I typically try to time the beat, but it never seems to be on enough. Guess my ear hand reflexes arent what they used to be! It just seems like I'm wasting my time making markers if I just go back and do it scrub frame by frame.

Waveforms never show up completely for me in FCPX, especially not when playing my project.

I've tried listening to songs and timing hitting the M key with the beats so it will be simple to cut to later on. I find my marks are always off by too much that I end up going back and listening for beats, defeating the purpose. I was wondering if anyone could share the way they set up markers or any other techniques they may use for editing to the beat.

I was able to do this for smaller groups, but not for my entire project. Hopefully by hitting the different groups I caught the problem clips and that this will be the last time exporting.

It seems to be an optical flow issue on the clips that have come back lately. Is there a way to select all or a group and make them all normal again?

A mix of stabilization, re-time, and/or optical flow. Nothing 3rd party used on them.

I thought about doing that, but so far I've had 3 different clips give me the error and they are all from 2 different cameras. I feel like at this rate I'm going to have to export, get an error, fix, repeat until i get to the end.

The issue is happening again, each clip/frame is there, but as Ronny mentioned it may be from optical flow. Is there a way to select every clip and make sure clips are normal? To go through every clip of an hour project will take too long.

Also, does this mean we shouldn't be using optical flow anymore?

The analysis files could be the cause, The original footage is a mix of avchd and h.264 that was all transcoded to prores by fcpx. Some of the clips may have optical flow check off as well. I trashed all the preference files and re-opened FCPX and have begun another try of exporting the master file at the moment.

It seems to have failed at the same frame as the previous attempt with the same error. First frame 12178, then 12616, then 13270. There's nothing done to these clips besides stabilization. Any ideas on what could be the cause?

I deleted the render files and I'm exporting the master file now without re-rendering first. It's been failing around the 12% mark so I'll report back hopefully after it works! Thanks Ronny.
