There is more then just old code. They also has the team from Nothing Real.
It has been said... before Shake a industry standard compositing software was dropped like a brick.. some of team went to The Foundry to work on Nuke.

In this case I would say Apple had the resources maybe not the strategy and the will to cater a special crowd.

Here is nice explanation from Ron Brinkmann, which we should know, right?

I agree to a certain extent. But Shake and Color were specialized and scandalously expensive standalone applications that had no future whatsoever anymore with regard to the upcoming competition that was better and much cheaper. Apple only bought these apps for their technologies while still selling them standalone at a much reduced price. Many technologies that were developed for the original Shake and Color have found their way in legacy FCP, Motion and FCP X.

Also remember: legacy FCP started as Final Cut, a Windows program written by Macromedia that was acquired by Apple, and it became a huge success.

I'm sure Simon has very valid reasons for wishing that mObject would be fully integrated into Motion. Because it is developed by Apple, Motion can tap directly into the lower levels of the OS and that's why it is so powerful and fast. Third party developers have to build their programs on the upper levels of the OS. As 3D requires lots of horse power, I'm sure mObject could also be much more powerful and faster than it is now if it could tap directly into the lower levels of the OS. So it's not really such a crazy idea.

Don't say Color and Shake had no future! :(
In the right hands they would have had a great future... look at Nuke...
Yeah you right they bought the Technology but to bad they are not using the good stuff. The paint tools in Shake rocked!
lol I think I will see if it will run in 10.10

One, Mac Pro, clean install with no issues with any of the applications and plugins.
The other Macbook Pro which have been updated since the Beta has some issues with Launchpad showing empty groups. Motion performance is not optimal. Compared to Mavericks. But all else is fine.

We know already know that there is some of Motion and what in Final Cut Pro X already.
But I'em not sure how well Final Cut Pro X will perform with round tripping.
I would rather have a option to add a reference clip that can be interchanged. For example I get a visual effect clip, knowing it will change and be updated. Add "reference clip" link it to the target clip. So when ever I update the clip it will automatically update. I know Final Cut Pro X doe something similar with clips that are importer to the Event or Library. But I want a reference clip that is not imported unless I get the final verso and on top of that as soon as the timing or resolution is different it can go.... crazy!

But I like to see some more option in Motion and Compressor.

So you are on a standard one 7200RPM USB disc?
Depending on the drive with USB2 you will be getting up to 480 Mbps and as haysoos123 suggested with Firewire 800 up to 800 Mbps.
Would you be able to switch to a Firewire 800 drive?

Also if you are already using Proxy in Final Cut Pro X also make sure it is set to Better Performance under Quality. Give it a try Let us know if that helps in anyway.

It is possible to use external "proxy" in Final Cut Pro X, but, as Ronny mentioned it can be unwise unless you have a solid workflow.

Would be possible to get more specs form your drive?
Aslo find out what is being used for grading, my first guess would be DaVinici.

If your projects a short a G-Tech should be fine. I can't say mich for the Cal Digit I haven't received enough feedback in the hardware forum.

I don't have to much experience with the drives from Caldigit but I'em aware that the T3 (Thunderbolt with three drives) has a Softraid controller. So keep in mind it will take CPU resources when using it.

Yes this is true, you want all your media... in fact all any media on a external drive.
Reason for this is incase your OS drive or even your workstation goes bye bye your project files are still good. On top of that you will have a speed boost. Well depending on the hardware.

Which to get depends on budget and demand.
I like to use a G-Raid for a Scratch drive, Pegasus2 Series and Caldigit T3 for a archival and production drive.

I mention HD and you mention 4K??? But I have good news it is also possible to work on a 4K project with the correct workflow.

I agree with Greg, updating some components and configuring them can give you a noticable boost.
Keep a eye out for some good deals, it is not impossible finding a Mac Pro with good configuration. But again depends when you need it, right?
