If you have any other question feel free to and nail a post here.

As AppleGuru mentioned give FCPX a try. There is a 30 day Trial here, download it and add import your footage from your last project and see how it works for you.

Yes you can nattily edit with h.264 in FCPX. But the nice thing about FCPX you can import your footage and transcode your material to; optimise and proxy (in the background) then you just switch between the different formats with a click with no relinking.

But back to your question I would do a test if you see a difference in transcoding your footage in ProRes and downscaling it... in FCP7 or your transcoding tool go choice.
So your delivery is 1080, do you even need to edit with 4K material (punch in..)?

Sorry I couldn't tell you if there is a plug for Final Cut Pro 7. I would have to do research myself since I stopped using Final Cut Pro 7 awhile back.

This is true that there "should not" be any visible difference for the eye when viewing the footage original transcoded footage.
ProRes LT is great if you are limited to bandwidth and hard drive space. Great in a Broadcast environment or a off-line to on-line process.
ProRes 422 will most closely match the original image quality.
ProRes 422 HQ is more in the direction RED, HDCAM, or HDCAM SR... overkill for DSLR.
I would go with ProRes 422 unless you are running on low drive space.

Take look at the Apple ProRes White Paper to give you a better understanding of the different flavours of ProRes.

It should give you a good idea and understanding. If you have any other questions after watching the video post your question here.

I myself love using my mouse and trackpad so I'm not the right person to demonstrate this but I figured someone here is a fast keyboard FCPX editor.

Interesting you say that... before the release of Final Cut Pro X I attended a Avid demonstration at the IBC and it seemed more limited vs to Final Cut Pro X. Know this was the year Final Cut Pro X was release things my have changed...

I will be uploading the shapes to my site and will be announcing them over Twitter.
I might not be adding them in a installer since there are some changes that have to be done within the Motion App to display them correctly in Motions Library.

So they rotoscoped her head from the good dialog take onto her body in another take that didn't have the jump cut. Was pretty awesome to see how quick and simple they could rotoscope her head on to her body/background seamlessly. They really didn't show much that would change how you work or make you go vegan or anything.

There is also a video that somewhat demonstrates this, that can be found in the Focus on Advanced Workflow.

Funny thing is, based on past updates, no matter what Apple does, there will be a handful of folks who bitch up a storm and cry over what Apple did NOT put in the update. No application updates with 100% of what everyone wants, that's just life. But if we get stability, performance, bug fixes, and that's it, I'd be VERY happy. So, whenever this puppy is released, I'm sure it will be nice. Not everything to everybody, but nice, cause that's just how Apple does stuff.

Here's a question, what would really get your panties in a wad if it were missing from the next update? Is there any such feature? Or would you be happy with a good stability/performance only update?

I totally agree with you, but again it has been awhile since Apple introduced something to keep Final Cut Pro X innovated... after multicam it hasn't presented anything new in the tool set.

Workflow is great... stability and performance I wouldn't mind a bit more support. ;)

I agree that statement can be somewhat misleading. The actual editing/finishing was done in 6 weeks. Pre-cutting was done on location during the shoot, which was done over a period of 11 months with many intervals.

Just imagine you make a documentary that takes a year shooting in different places. You may log your footage after every shoot and you may start organizing and pre-cutting some parts of the story. Then a few weeks later you have another shooting period and you also do some pre-cutting of that. When all the footage is shot you assemble the pre-cuts to create the final edit. That does not mean your editing has taken a year.

It is possible to get a similar read performance as RAID 0" if" the controller uses multiplexing to read data.
Here is a good example using the T3 from CalDigit:

    MB/sec:
    Single drive: 184 write / 181 read
    2-drive mirror: 184 write / 198 read
    3-drive mirror: 184 write / 271 read

A 2-drive mirror offers brief spikes of better performance than a single drive averaging 9% faster than a single drive—not nothing but not much either.
    ...
Mirroring generally runs at the speed of a single drive or a bit slower for writes (all drives can be written simultaneously, but there is some overhead). A mirror can offer higher read speed, but not necessarily.

If you are on a RAID 1 and you are having issues with "working" drive as Jason mentioned this could be data/soft corruption.

Performance wise RAID 1 speed should correspond to a single drive since both drive in RAID 1 would write and read the data simultaneously.

On older controllers or controllers that use heavy software processing you might find tad slower. Noticeable?
Copying 4GB (RAID 1 = Drive 1) on a thunderbolt connection shouldn't take that long...

Just FYI when purchasing drives at the same time (G-Tech enclosed drives) there is always the chance the other drive(s) might also fail.

Sebastian I hope you can get your data back. Crossing my fingers for you.

Misleading yes and no, you still can export alpha matte as ProRes by choosing only Alpha in the Color (Farbe) drop down menu.

Your right they could move Alpha option to another section or have it appear depending on the codec, not to confuse user that are not aware of the codecs abilities. Maybe in Motion 6? ;)

To make your day easy as Ronny suggested let Final Cut Pro X transcode your RED footage to a Proxy.
When you are done all you do export your XML to DaVinci using the original footage.

If you like keep media where it is select "Leave files in place" and you can also select "Create Proxy media" from the Media Import window.

    Hi, to answer your questions,

    1. No you can export ProRes 422 higher then 1920x1080, you will lose some metadata.
    2. I would go over there learning site
    3. Useful for grading or editing? Editing = ProRes for colouring = RAW (REDcode)
    4. Not sure what you mean to match? But you can transcode the files in Final Cut Pro X (Optimize) or Compressor
    5. Again you want to use the RAW files.

On the performance side, what are your specs of your Mac that you are working of and where and how are they stored?
    Sounds like performance issue...
