Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic 'Crashes on fcp x? This could be the reason' in the forum.I hope they get it fixed quickly for you. We work with Retina Macbook Pro's at work, and they have been an utter joy in speed for us. Much better then our older Mac Pro's. And the speed of FCPX is a joy for us, when working in Prores though.
That being said, I also had troubles installing new machines trough time Machine, even before Lion/Mountain Lion. I quickly learned: all the non-App Store apps, save a .dmg or the disc or both, save a document with all your licenses, so you can re-install without worrying. Yes, it takes time, but it works out the best in the long term.
Although I was also pretty cynical about the Mac App Store (and I still think some things could be better, for instance the sandboxing thing that prevents a lot of more power apps to be sold on the App Store, and being able to backup a .dmg in some way), I must say it has done wonders for me personally and also on the job.

Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic 'Timecode Box' in the forum.Hi Buskins,
I've asked Apple some extra features regarding timecode, for instance, being able to copy/paste in it.
Please also send feedback to Apple. The more people do this, the more chance they add this capability.

Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic 'Adobe CC' in the forum. If Apple is smart, they use this timing to give another marketing push to FCPX, and maybe extra development push.
I hear a lot of people who left FCP7 for Adobe saying *now* that because of this paying model, they are willing to check FCPX again. If Apple is smart, they take advantage of that.
A lot of people took the bait when Adobe took advantage of the FCPX-launch mess when they launched their switch campaign.

Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic 'What is the best Thunderbolt RAID?' in the forum. Here some very happy users from 3 Pegasus R6 raids. They are really really fast, very user friendly and have been stable without a hickup, running almost constantly for the past 4 months.

Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic '10.08 released!!' in the forum.El Cuajinais wrote:I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming rendering would take considerably longer in MBL vs. FCPX native grading, and I'm working off a laptop. (Is this assumption correct?)
You are very correct.
If you work with Prores Media in FCPX, and you grade with the color board, even pretty complex grades render and export VERY quickly in my opinion. Even 4 color grades on top of each other go very quick.
Magic Bullet Looks is SUPER slow in comparison.
That being said, I think MBL is a good package. It has good presets, but the way you can very easily make your own presets is very easy and powerful at the same time.

Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic 'FCPX 10.0.8 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION' in the forum.canelson wrote:If this is going to be a small update with bug fixes and a few new features, I would like to see:
Secondary Storyline parameters in the Inspector.
Scale, X-Y position, opacity, crop and enable/disable options.
Attach a clip to a timecode
Instead of connecting clips to clips, let me connect them to the TC bar at the top, so they can stay locked at that position.
Individually drag-adjustable Timeline lane heights.
Drag an effect
From the Inspector to a clip or selected clips in the Timeline or Event Browser.
Great suggestions!
Have you mailed them to Apple?

Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic 'How should I import footage from a DVD recorder into Final Cut Pro X?' in the forum.Get the free program Mpeg Streamclip.
Open the DVD in that program. Export to Quicktime: choose any flavour of Prores (I would advise Prores LT). And then you get files you can use in FCPX.

Mathieu Ghekiere replied to the topic 'timecode reader' in the forum.parkerhqj wrote:Thanks. It must have taken you a while to come up with that, but I'm glad you did. I'll give it a try. I've heard warnings about using too many compound clips and bogging down the computer. Has this affected the performance at all? I've used compound clips animating stills (the Ken Burns Effect won't freeze without creating holds which require you to make compound clips), but I've tried to keep them to a minimum. It doesn't sound like it's affected you though.
Compound Clips used to effect performance, and could be problematic, because every compound clip was an independent entity. If you started cutting in one of them, it made a NEW compound clip. This caused bloat.
Since 10.0.6 it works more like the old nesting in FCP7, where a change in a compound clip, ripples trough to every edit where you used it. Since then compound clips are not a big performance-problem anymore. You just have to check the workflow and keep an eye on where you change things and where you used clips.
PS: I have noticed that rendering Timecode in FCPX is quick in comparison with 7 though.
We had a quad image we made, with 4 images on, with on all four a timecode. I thought rendering that out would be a nightmare, but it all went very smooth, on a retina Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt Raid.
