Yep, that's gonna be a timesaver. I'm constantly changing the clip appearance to the solid bar to avoid the slow re-draws.

i also have sometimes electrical shocks from my MBP .... it depends on the shoes i'm wearing

My house has some sort of minor grounding issue that causes electrical problems from time to time. I haven't found anyone (who I can afford to pay) that can fix it. When it's dry out, I can get shocked by touching almost anything metal, filing cabinets are the worst.

My solution: I don't wear shoes in the house any more. Sock are fine, no shoes. Also if you happen to have one of the those hard plastic office chair mats in your home or office so your office chair can roll more easily, they are the worst for generating static electricity.

One more thing, because I seem to be much more susceptible to static electricity than my family or anyone else I know, I googled it once and found that this is not uncommon. Some people are just more sensitive to static electricity. It doesn't appear that anyone knows why, but there are many forum posts out there about people like me complaining about awful shocks.

    Good luck,

  • Dave G replied to the topic 'What is render files?' in the forum.
    BenB wrote:
Think of things in the Timeline like Layers in Photoshop or Motion.

I have a clip in Storyline. That's one layer.
I place two filters on it. There's two more layers.
I put a PIP image on top of that. Another layer.
Titles on top of it all. I just ended up with 5 layers, so to speak.

When I playback, the computer has to stream all 5 video layers (plus each audio channel and filter add more layers), mix them, all in real time, which can be difficult. With music, narration, sound effect that adds 7+ more (audio) layers.

A render file is a way to "flatten" or "merge" all of that stuff so I'm only playing back one video stream, and two (stereo) audio streams. MUCH easier for the computer to play back, but NOT the final output, thus it only needs to be good enough quality for playback, not delivery. That adds more ease of playback for the computer. They only effect playback and nothing else, not export, nothing.

Great, simple explanation! I like the "flatten" or "merge" concept as you applied it here.

Double click the clip in the timeline to expand the audio then add the dissolve.

I just learned this trick myself a couple of days ago, it works great. One thing I'll add though is to be sure to drag the transition to just the video track.

Once you double-click the audio portion again to close it up, you can now drag different transitions on top on the one you just added and only the video portion will be affected. I love this tip!

Um, there's a round, threaded hole here in the bottom of it. Is that a Thunderbolt port?

Thunderbolt, tripod mount, pretty much the same. If it doesn't work, you are probably holding it wrong.

  • Quote: Right-click on the clip in the browser and select open in timeline. Shift the audio 10 frames with Shift-comma or Shift-period. Do this before editing into your project. Yes, excellent idea. I never do any work on files prior to adding them to the Project, so I don't believe I would have come up with this idea. I also don't think I've seen much in the way of tutorials regarding Event file preparation tricks. It might be a good one. Thanks, Dave

  • I have ScreenFlow screen captures that consistently are out of sync by about 10 frames because it's first being run through Adobe Connect servers. I have 3 of these videos a week that I have to edit, so if I can find a quick easy fix, that would be great. As a quickie test, I detached the audio and moved it ahead 10 frames, recompiled the video/audio as a Compound Clip and it's better. It will never be great because it appears that when run through the Adobe servers it comes back at about 10-20 fps. 1. Would this be easier and quicker to move the video instead of detaching the audio? I'd rather not create Compound Clips if possible. 2. Should I do this to the original file in the Event Browser before bringing it into a Project? I certainly would want to do it at the beginning of the edit before I make cuts. I guess the advantage of bringing it down to the Project first might be that after cutting off the un-needed footage at the top and end in the Event, it would give "handle" space for the video to work with in the Project. Thanks, Dave

Before the end of the tax year, I upgraded to 16GB of RAM and replaced the Optical Drive with another hard drive specifically for FCP X, so I'm in good shape hardware-wise. Thanks, Dave

  • I like the way you think. That's a good extra precaution that won't take more than 5 seconds. Unless someone else comes up with a negative, I'll do this after I finish this current edit. Thanks, Dave

  • I can't afford the time at this point to upgrade my OS from 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion or even to go from 10.0.4 to 10.0.7, too much work going on to make changes with compound clips and so forth. (And frankly, everything is working just fine right now. No complaints here.) But, I know my days for FCPX upgrades that will support 10.6.8 are numbered. I would though like to download 10.0.7, in case I want to use it in the future, just not right now. Anything wrong with this plan: -Take my current version of and "hide" it in a folder. -Download 10.0.7, but not open it, just tuck it away in a folder. -Bring out 10.0.4 and get back to work. My understanding is that aside from the app itself, nothing else would get installed from 10.0.7 that might "break" 10.0.4 (as long as I don't open 10.0.7 and allow it to upgrade Events and Projects). Make sense? Thanks, Dave

  • Dave G created a new topic ' ScreenFlow special until 1/15/13' in the forum.
Someone just emailed this to me. I already own ScreenFlow, but if it's something you might need, this is a great price for it: "Our friends at Telestream are supporting our efforts to help you be a successful educational video publisher with a special code to save you 50% on the fabulous new ScreenFlow 4, also good until January 15th: SF50LBLTPS" I paid full price for it a year or so ago, but I use it all the time. • Paul, I got the video up if you'd like to take a look. I went back to your website to get an email address, but couldn't find a way to contact you. So, if you email me at: webmaster3 (at) harmonicalessons.com ... I can set you up to get in to view. (NocoDave, Tony, Alex, if you have an interest, I can do the same for you.) Dave

  • Paul, The only problem was that the turn around time for your update must have been at least 20 minutes. It's a good thing I decided not to hold my breath. Kidding of course. Great job! As far as I'm concerned, your version should now be THE Apple default version. I have an edit for a half hour class I will try to crank out tonight or tomorrow at the latest. When done, I'll put a screen shot up here in this thread of the final result so you can see why your version is so helpful in what I do. Also, as I mentioned earlier, I will posted this in my private Members Area as soon as the edit is done. If you'd like to see the final video, I'll be happy to give you access. Thanks, Dave

  • Paul, I did as you suggested, but it's not working in my version of 10.0.4. It comes up with the FCPX red screen and yellow caution sign when I try to apply. Unless I missed something, it will likely work in 10.0.7 when I get a chance to upgrade. Thanks again and Happy New Year, Dave

  • I've been successfully using the default Lower 3rd Text template called "Information Bar" for online tutorials for quite some time now. In the majority of cases, it's fine for what I need. I just ran into a situation where I'd like to be able to take the "bar" and change the opacity (or density) closer to 100%, but this parameter is not published by default. I don't have Motion 5 nor do I have any plans to pick it up anytime soon as I just don't have time to spend on the learning curve and overall, I don't have a need for it (except for this instance). I'm guessing it's a simple tweak to add and then publish the parameter. Would someone mind doing this for me that has Motion 5? I'd be happy to trade a favor or even pay? It's not a big deal as I can live with it the way it is now, but it would be helpful. Thanks, Dave

  • Bob, It sounds like you've got a workflow that works for you and of course, that's all that matters. I too still tend to go "old school" for bigger edits and first re-boot, close apps and sometimes turn off wi-fi. (The big one for me is closing Mail so I'm not tempted to take a look and get distracted. I hate it when that happens.) Happy New Year and editing, Dave
