Donald Mitchell replied to the topic 'Black & White' in the forum.Just figured out that the grain using the RT Black & White Filter is only visible when using proxies. So problem solved. Thanks anyway.

Donald Mitchell replied to the topic 'Black & White' in the forum.Sadly the link seems to be broken. Looked on his other site and that template seems to be locked, I need a log-in and password. My French isn't good enough to get any further than that! Just to clarify though I don't need an aged film effect, just a nice monochrome look.

Donald Mitchell created a new topic ' Black & White' in the forum. Can anyone recommend a good black and white filter for FCPX? The inbuilt one seems a bit weak. I've been trying out RT Black & White from Ripple Training, and it has great controls, but it adds a lot of grain to the footage. Prefer freebie but happy to spend a few bucks.

Donald Mitchell replied to the topic Re: archiving projects in the forums.Sorry been away - thanks for the replies. Regarding losing data from HDs. I've always archived projects onto 2 x HDs. I have some now that are 8 years old, and no data loss has occurred (yet!) mind you they probably do get spun up at least once a year. I might look into blu-ray, but how long is that technology going to be around? At least with an HD, even if the connectors change or become obsolete you can always take the case apart and plonk the drive into a caddy.

Donald Mitchell created a new topic archiving projects in the forums.I have just finished editing 15 short videos, now signed off by client. I want to archive everything onto an external HD and delete it all from my iMac. What's the best procedure to follow so that if in future I need to come back to the project (unlikely) I can do so easily?

Donald Mitchell replied to the topic Re: clips jumpy in angle editor and resetting trim in the forums.I am outputting full res files. I'd love to know what kind of system would allow me to do a 20 angle multi cam edit at full res!
The RAM I bought on Amazon:
www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMSO8GX3M1A1333...37778058&sr=8-16
Made a mistake though - it's £169.20

Yeah I'm planning to get a thunderbolt drive for media at some point, but still I'm amazed at what this little iMac and FCPX can do with ProRes footage.

Donald Mitchell created a new topic clips jumpy in angle editor and resetting trim in the forums.I'm finding that FCPX isn't playing clips smoothly in the angle viewer. Clips have a jump in them that corresponds to a cut on the timeline. I'm thinking it has to do with trimming, as on the timeline I've slid some clips to maintain sound sync. What's going on, and how do I reset the trim on a clip to zero, if for example I've slid it 4 frames either way?

Donald Mitchell created a new topic Import Problem in the forums.I'm importing a bunch of prores files which are on a folder on my desktop. I'm not copying them into the events folder, I am making proxies.
When I import the files they come in as missing proxies.
What's causing this?

can't you post the bit after the www?
discovered the main reason it was slow though - forgot to switch proxies back on in the prefs - doh!

Donald Mitchell replied to the topic Re: ProRes generations in the forums. Thanks guys,
I think you're probably right Seanus - so should I edit in H264 in FCPX, or do I transcode from H264 to ProRes on import?
Then onto AE as ProRes and save for web from there?

Donald Mitchell created a new topic ProRes generations in the forums. How well does proves 422 stand up to a bit of to-ing and fro-ing? I have converted H264 files from a DSLR into ProRes using MPEG Streamclip, then edited in FCPX, and want to take the edit into AE for final effects, before rendering out to ProRes from AE, then onto Handbrake for final web compression.
Will this degrade the image much?

Donald Mitchell created a new topic Gone slow in the forums. After working speedily yesterday doing a multi cam edit, today everything seems slow, dropped frames etc. Mind you my whole mac is running a bit slow.
What are the best maintenance routines for speeding up FCPX?

Donald Mitchell created a new topic Relinking and Proxies in the forums.I'm doing several large multi cam edits. I keep my master ProRes media offline and import the files as proxies, then do my editing.
Some shots need stabilised and I use the Warp Stabilizer in After Effects for this, stabilising the offline master ProRes files.
How do I relink the new stabilised master files? If I use the relink dialog and choose the new stabilised offline files, will FCPX create new proxies automatically?
