Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Mixing 4k footage with 1080p for reframing question.' in the forum. So I take it that the purpose then is to gain experience in actually shooting 4K and not necessarily editing it. You can conform that footage to FIT the 1080 project with no problems and edit as if it were 1080. And yes, proxies will help the edit speed for sure.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Mac compatible DVD authoring and burning software' in the forum.I have heard decent reports of Toasts' capabilities and at one point, an Apple tech support guy suggested that to me. I still use DVD Studio Pro on a networked G5 that I can send my encodes to, so I don't have direct experience with Toast.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Strange texture in videos.' in the forum. There are many noise reduction plugins that work with FCPX, but there is no substitute for proper lighting and obtaining good exposure while filming. That eliminates the need for fixing in post.
When it is impossible to light scenes properly, the resulting noise can be improved with plugins from Tiffen (DFX Bundle), Neat Video, and other vendors.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Startdisk full error while moving files' in the forum.Glad you have it corrected. You didn't specify how you were moving your projects and events, but this should be done preferably within FCPX to keep its' database updated.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Problem with lots of Projects' in the forum. On occasion I have found that duplicating the project WITHOUT the render files and allowing the process to create a new event with used clips only has solved certain problems that existed with the original project.
But, as with all releases of FCPX, many issues corrected in 10.0.8, but definitely some new bugs came along.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Burning DVD/Blu-ray' in the forum.Don is right about clients sometimes preferring a tangible product. To that end, consider supplying the media on a thumb drive, or better yet, on dvd DATA discs assuming the files will fit. You can still supply the case with any graphic/photographic images and design so clients have a more meaningful item.
If the video is shot well in high def I prefer not to let the DVD encoding reduce the quality, but to supply a full resolution version along with a more easily playable universal mp4 file.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Weird problem in the import-dialogue' in the forum. It would appear that something is corrupt within your main account. If you cannot isolate the preference file or application that is the culprit, you may have to delete that account and re-establish a new user.
Try operating as the new user and getting your programs to work with that account prior to deleting your current main account. Maybe also try repairing permissions with your main account on all drives and doing some routine maintenance on the computer.

I am not sure whether you can use those cards in your 2009 MacPro, but I assume you did homework to check that.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Drop Zones for Templates NOT playing Video' in the forum.I haven't noticed problems with FCPX titles either. Specifically I am using a variety of Motion VFX templates. The particular one I am trying to finish for a client is Motion VFX Project 015. But I have tried several, along with some Ripple Templates that appear to act the same way. For still images, the clip in point does match when placed into a drop zone, but for moving video it does not. This is happening on all drop zones within the template.
I now have the template working for the most part, but only by creating a compound clip and using that in the drop zone. Of the 9 drop zones in this template, all are working now but number 6 is still starting at the beginning of the clip when in fact it should start 4 seconds into that clip.
This is sounding like an update perhaps to the Motion VFX and other third part templates is needed, or got broken with 10.0.8.

Dan Wierling created a new topic ' Drop Zones for Templates NOT playing Video' in the forum.I cannot get any drop zones in any template to playback a video clip. The accept the clip and only playback a still image. Most of the ones I've tried are Motion VFX templates, but also others. These have worked in the past, so is this an issue with 10.0.8?

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'share operation Export failed when creating frame (error -1)' in the forum. To trash the render files, in the project library, highlight the project and then from the FILE menu above choose "Delete Project Render files". You will be presented with an option to delete "Unused" files or "All" files. Select "All".
Repeat the procedure for your event render files. Select the event or events associated with your project one at a time, and then again from the FILE menu above choose "Delete Event Render Files". Same options, select "All".
Reopen your project and try to re-render if needed. You can also omit rendering and just Share to export a master file. FCPX will automatically render prior to sharing.
If this doesn't help, consider trashing preferences and restarting FCPX.
The latest version of FCPX 10.0.8 is supposed to work now with Core Melt products, and I believe Lock and Load as a part of that.

Dan Wierling created a new topic ' Share plist file defaults to open with a Compressor preset' in the forum.Working yesterday when FCPX suddenly crashed and upon restarting, the last 4 hours of my edits were completely gone. Tried the backup project to no avail. Prior to the crash I noticed that the + sign to zoom in the timeline did not work. The - sign to zoom out worked fine. After I re-edited the project, all was well, so I assume some effect or particular animated title may have been the cause. Still don't know why the backup project was also missing the data.
Lesson learned here is that once something begins to not function normally within the program, immediately close the project and exit FCPX before it does it abruptly.
Now for the topic issue (which may be related) - I noticed that the ShareStatus.plist file in my projects Shared Items directory is defaulted to open with a Vimeo HD compressor preset. This preset exists on my system, but how it got associated with the share status preference file is beyond me. The project works fine anyway and the shared items do as well. No icons next to the project in the library.
Here is a screenshot of the get info data. Does anyone know what this preference file should normally open with? FCPX is ghosted out if I try to browse to it.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Finder Dock & FCP X Scrub issues!' in the forum.I would try uninstalling the Touch Software and removing the Magic Track Pad (at least to test if it is the culprit). You might also try moving your dock to either side of the display rather than placing it at the bottom. This might allow you to work easier on your timeline (assuming the trackpad isn't the issue).

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Could someone explain to me video formats when using FCPX?' in the forum. To expand on cseeman's comments, with which I agree, FCPX makes this process even easier for those that don't need to know exact settings needed for their exports. Simply SHARE to a DVD, YOUTUBE, etc., etc. As you grow more comfortable with the application and have time to experiment with outputting your projects, you'll find you can achieve better results by tweaking export settings thru compressor (and to some extent within FCPX).

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Import hiccup from Canon DSLR' in the forum.I don't have the answer, but I can tell you that this topic has come up before and I believe I recall reading a couple solutions to it on this forum. Do a good search and maybe you can locate it (although the forum has been revamped some time back and possible those threads could be lost).
ALSO - are you importing directly from camera, or from an archive of the data on a hard drive? I seem to recall the issue had something to do with FCPX believing the camera was either attached or not attached.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'The relink function sucks' in the forum.I second the request for better relinking. It requires an exact, unmodified match to work and is troublesome at best. Dealing with a large amount of clips with marked in and out points can be a real pain. I have requested the ability to save clip segments (not the entire clip) that are used within projects. If this ever happens, perhaps the relinking can be made to work more reliably.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Erase' in the forum.Yes, Time MAchine would be a real life saver here. But if you didn't have it running you can look for many drive restoration apps that are available and hopefully one of them will work for you. Sounds like Lee has experience with Data Rescue so I'd give that a shot first.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Documentary footage to be edited in FCPX' in the forum.I have experience with firewire capture devices on legacy fcp, but not USB. As I recall, it was necessary to connect the capture device BEFORE you start FCP in order for the program to recognize your device. This was certainly the case in FCP 6.06 and I would expect also in 7. So you might give that a try before giving up.
Consider buying an inexpensive bi-directional firewire DV converter such as this one available from B&H.

If you want to spend more, you can get higher end models, but this will do the job for you nicely.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'dvdsp wtf need help asap' in the forum.Obviously late for the help now, but FWIW...you don't have to post the entire Video TS folder with assets. The project file .layout (usually UNTITLED_DISC.layout) until you name it contains your DVD structure.
DVDSP can have some issues if opening earlier versions of projects (i.e. DVD SP4 opening a DVD SP2 project file).

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Help: Maintaining consistency in color between different display devices' in the forum. That is somewhat of a "loaded" question. Color consistency has always been an issue among multiple devices. There are just too many potential causes of difference in luminosity, hue, saturation, etc. The type of display that each computer uses will affect it's color representation, the user settings for brightness, contrast, etc., etc. will all be a factor. If you are in a broadcast environment, there are products and techniques that can assist you in producing for consistent and legal color gamuts. If you are producing for the web, this is less serious and as long as you are grading on a decent quality monitor and using your video scopes to help manage your image, you should get reasonably comparable quality on most current displays.
You should be able to more closely match your external monitor to your Macbook display, and so if this is way off you need to make some adjustments to one or the other. You might try to color calibrate the Macbook first.
But, all this aside, even if you get your system displays to match, that's no guarantee that playback on other peoples computers will display the same colors. One more point,,,,when burning to DVD, assuming SD DVD, you are at quite a bit lower resolution and overall quality that your original HD material would be (unless of course you are editing in standard def from start).

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Sync audio when making a music video' in the forum. When you import the clips from your camera you will have several clips that represent the same section of song, only from different angles. Select those 4 or 5 clips in the event browser and then choose to "Make them a Multicam Clip". Choose to use the audio as reference for syncing them. Drag that multicam clip to the timeline.
Now in the viewer, change it to the angle viewer so you can see all those clips in their respective angle windows.
In your timeline, as you play back the multicam clip you can click in realtime on the proper angle in the angle viewer to make an instant cut to that camera angle.

Dan Wierling replied to the topic 'Steadicam or FCP stabilization?' in the forum. The HFS20 is so small and light, I doubt you would even need stabilization. The monopod is a good idea for that cam if you find you do need some.
As far as the camera itself, CNET reviews are not very favorable on it and it looks to be a pretty basic consumer product. Depending on how far you intend to take your wedding videography, I would look to save up for a more professional product before I would purchase stabilization for that camera.
