I have this project where I'm going for Norwegian record. Up and down Kilimanjaro in less than 10 hours (yes, it's possible). I'm also doing a fundraiser for the Norwegian Lung Cancer union. The media in Norway doesn't seem to find this interesting enough. I get some advice to do most on my own, that way it's easier for the media to publish it. By that, I want to create a really creative and catchy video which will go viral. I know, it's easier sad than done.

I'm going to Africa January 21st, and will be running February 2nd. So I don't have a lot of time.

Do you have any advice for me? What is creative? What do people want to see? What will fly by itself?

I'm a busy person. I'm a student 100%, I have a job, I have a girlfriend and a 3 month old kid, and I exercise 10-12 hours a week. Including this I have a blog where I update my progress, and I administering the fundraiser. I would really love to combine all this into a humorous video. Just let people now what kind of person I am. I want to inspire people to get things done. I want people to laugh. I want them to cry (you know, cancer is a bitch!). And I want the fundraiser to go viral.

I have around 400 friends on Facebook, so I need people to share. But it has kind of met a dead end. So I need more!

So, any help from you creative souls?

Getting a bit philosophical … sorry.

… hm, imagine, someone would ask for an idea for a movie about 'driving'.
Possible answers:
  • Thelma & Lousie
    Days of Thunder
A Live broadcast of any Nascar race

  • … see what I mean?
the question implies the answer - and your question is so … general - what answer do you expect? What is the story of your project? The Ariadne thread, you're guiding the watcher with?

Hmm, I thought I narrowed it down.

The goal is to make a viral video. A video that is picked up by media. E.g. national newspaper. They rather want a video they can post, than writing an article.

I will make my story short:
My mom died of cancer 15 years ago. The years to follow friends and co-workers got cancer. Luckily, they all survived. My curiosity for cancer was growing. I want to find out why!
I moved to another city, and had I save job for 12 years. At the end I decided to follow my dreams, and get a degree.
I quit my job at the age of 35 to go for a university degree.
I had to fix my grades from high school. And that was tough! Grown man starting a new life.
    Went for Biomedical Laboratory Scientist.
Before starting school, I decided to go from a cyclist to a runner. I needed something else to motivate me. So, in order to keep me motivated, I decided to run up and down Kilimanjaro.
That's when the idea for the fundraiser came up. Why don't I raise some money while doing this?

That's my story, and now I need to combine my grown up life with this. Being a dad, boyfriend, student, colleague, ambitious athlete who exercise 10-12 hours a week, friend.

It's all about giving the viewers attention to my project, mainly the fundraiser. That's one of the reason why I'm running up and down Kilimanjaro. That's not something everyone does. I want to do something else to create headlines in order to get attention towards the fundraiser. I want to inspire and motivate. I keep hearing that I do, not only from friends, but from all over, so I guess it somewhat working.

The video must be catchy, not boring shit. Obvious ;)

Perhaps the video can start with a clip of my moms tombstone.

I need brainstorming and creative ideas.

As someone at a TV station with a news channel, we take written articles over viral videos.

That's interesting. Only the local newspaper has taken interest in my story. Of all videos and articles online, there is a lot of rubbish. I'm actually surprised that any of the national newspapers or TV station find my project interesting. Perhaps I'm not the right guy to talk, since I'm the owner of this project. But I know they all get a lot of inquiries, so I'm not sure the actually have read my emails.

The reason why I want to make a video is because I got some inside information telling my that it's much easier with a video.

Video doesn't hurt, it can help. More importantly, learn who the right person is at a specific news organization to get in touch with. If you just send it in general to everyone, chances are you'll not get picked up. Research who the reporters are, what type of news each does, then target one specifically. Remember that you are competing with millions and millions of other people trying to tell their stories. Also, YouTube it, and do your best to out-do the competition. You're in a hyper-competitive situation.

Target specific reporters, not general organizations as a whole.
Start a web site for the project, seriously, with YT and all the other social media.
Get the non-profit you're raising money for onboard to help promote it.

99.9999% of our stories come from organizations, not individuals. But it can be done, just not easy.

    Wishing you all the best!
