Great site guys!

I recently wrote a whole comment, only to find that it re-directed me to Facebook. But I don't really want to use FB here on FCP.co. I deleted the comment.

Maybe I'm missing something. Is there another way to comment?

Thanks!

Hi Andrew,

Facebook comments are the best way to avoid spam and most people these days who are on the internet have an account.

We don't have an plans to implement another system

I don't, and I don't plan on getting one.

But on another issue: I think your mission statement is wrong. It should not read "aiming to be the number one...", but rather "THE number one...."

Sorry about that, we just haven't got the resources to fight comment spammers

As for the mission statement -we are getting there...

i gotta bump this because the facebook option for comments on articles is BS!!!

we have accounts here and they should be used for comments and not facebook accounts.

but i guess the facebook comment api was much easier to integrate into the website, then using the accounts we have here

Integrating Facebook is a real PITA as they keep on changing the Graph API.
Twice now we have had the comments disappear overnight because of changes.

What it does do is regulate spam and if you have ever run anything online you will know that deleting it is a huge time waster.

For that reason alone, the Facebook comments will remain the only way for the moment you will be able to post.

Many internet users have facebook accounts, not MOST. Latest stats have about 1B facebook users out of 2.4B internet users. Roughly 42% of internet users are facebook users. The other 58% can't comment on this site. :(

I enjoy reading FCP.co, but I'm still not engaging with the site because the above is so so so true ^

Perhaps FCP.co can start selling something, to afford to scale out of this commenter hog-tie situation?

I've let my opinions of being Facebook comments and Twitter contest exclusives be known already, and have been chastised for it. Don't think anything is going to change. Other sites are forcing us to register with Big Brother or else not have access to the services. That's the way of the world today.

I know a lot of people (particularly young people by the way) who do not use FB as a matter of principle. Which I think is fair enough. Like lets face it FB is bulls**t. Most intelligent people know this. And lets imagine that it goes the way of My Space in another year or two. Then you guys have this comment system based on a dead horse so to speak.

You need a plan B. A back up system if you will. All editors know this. Roll your own comment system. Have FB as an option but only as an option. Can you guys not get some kind of Captcha system going with a view to avoiding Spam? Seriously serious! For me it is a very important principle.

PS am I blind or is there no option for me to decide whether this comment is posted on FB on not!?! I am curious to see if this turns up on my FB profile…

i don't see much spam here on the forum. saying that facebook accounts prevent spamming is not valid. spammers can simply create accounts for their bots and then what? spam!

i also block facebook with donttrackme because i don't want facebook to know which website i visit and i don't want a website, including this one, to know what my facebook account is.

saying that facebook comments are even trouble to maintain, this should make you think to change the system.

You don't see much spam on here because I delete it, delete the user and the ban the IP address.

Not true. Facebook takes a tough stance on spammers.

You can also choose if you want your Facebook comment to appear on your Facebook page.

Sorry but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages

Hi Peter

"You can also choose if you want your Facebook comment to appear on your Facebook page."

OK that is good to know. Thumbs up.

Don´t know where I can make that choice but I guess that I did at some point!

Because my Comment did not go to FB :-)

I am guessing that this Site is based on Joomla.

When I do the following search

extensions.joomla.org/search?q=captcha

It looks like there are 100s of possibilities?

Call me paranoid if you like but if I had the technically know how I would be Online anonymously 24/7

It drives me crazy that I google about hard drive ABC and then I have to look at adds for this hard drive ABC for the rest of my life be that in or outside the FB box.

Comments will go this way if they have not dome so already…

I suspect that I am not alone in objecting to being cornered into a situation where I am left with nothing but the illusion of Choice at best! :woohoo:

I give FB 2 years maximum in Europe before it is complete uncool :-)

I believe that you have a responsibility to yourself and your users! And that you need to offer your users real choice.

best

Paul

paul,

You misunderstand, the mechanicals of setting up a comment system are easy and could be done in half an hour on, yes, Joomla. Captcha included

It is the policing of the comments that takes the resources.

Ok so we are not talking about Viagra and Co Robots here?

Rather FCP King of the Universe slagging off FCP King of the Solar System?

I still think that there should be a level playing pitch for all.

And I still believe that you guys kind have an obligation to do this!

Forgive me for diverging into a parallel universe inside a parallel universe ...

I live next to a school.

I am sitting there having breakfast in the kitchen with my girlfriend this morning and she says, oh no they are praying again. (We see the school from the Kitchen)

Yeah they have to stand up and pray before class starts.

The conversation went on to France (she is from France / I am from Ireland and we are living in Germany  )

Recently there was the debate about whether muslim women should wear head scarves or not.

I don´t really even want to go there.

Because it is really complicated can be twisted also....

Buttttt briefly it can be divided down into 3 areas.

Inside your 4 walls, on the street and at a public office/building.

Anyway I found the following argumentation interesting.

In state institutions in France you are not allowed to wear anything that would say that you are Catholic, Muslim or a Neo Nazi for that matter. i.e. NO go in a public building.

They want to treat every one in the same way. And by saying that headscarves are OK and Crosses are not they are treating people differently and that is discrimination!

I think that this Site is becoming an institution and that is great.

And I think along with that comes a certain amount of responsibility!!!

A tempest in a teacup? I don't have an Facebook account either. However, if one finds an article interesting, what stops you to open a thread in the forum to discuss said article? Or do I see something wrong?

And how would a tea cup fair if it suddenly found itself inside of the tempest? I pity inanimate objects...

Well the buddhist do say

"Emptiness is form; form is emptiness"

So maybe a tea cup would not fair so badly in the eye of a storm after all :silly:

Hi Peter

Just thinking aloud here and trying to bend this topic back in a constructive direction.

Have Users police users :-)

Take a plugin like this one here

stackideas.com/komento.html

It has the following...

“Comment Reporting

Users can lodge reports to the site administrator of any abusive comments at any time.”

best
