Oh no, say it isn't so!

Naturally all smart & beautiful people love FCP.co, its wonderful support staff & contributing members (ok, even the silent ones too...), but I think I've found a slight glitch in the system here.

Sorry to be a harbinger of dire news...

Have you ever noticed that in your zeal to respond to something in a thread your exuberance overtakes your sensibilities? Countless times I've posted something here, only to find it full of spelling mistakes or some other egregious effrontery. Thank God for the edit button! Whew.. I can go back, clean it up & come off looking of somewhat average education & not a backwoods hick. (not that there's anything wrong with that, nor is this a slight against the fine people of MTV's new moonshine & inbreeding hit Buckwild)

So, here's the glitch; the correction appears only in the thread where you placed it, BUT did you know a copy appears on your profile page? AND.. you guessed it, that version DOESN'T get corrected. Yikes!

Have you ever wondered why people reading one of your comments might think "Hmmm... this erudite fellow makes some rather salient points..." Yet after visiting your profile page come away shaking their heads thinking "That doofus is a complete & utter assclown." ?

Well, now you know why.

I have 224 "Thank Yous", but I have a negative 12 Karma. How the hell does that work? Negative Karma? So we have a tool to "bash" other folks! Great!

Click on the red minus next to your karma score to reduce it even more. Hmmm, can you click on one of your own posts? Dunno, haven't given it a try. Edit: I see that you can't. Too bad.

Most of the Thank Yous that I've given have been an error... I meant to reply to the post but clicked on the wrong button. :P

You cannot affect your own Karma...that is up to the people reading your posts (Ben for a few bucks I'll bump you back up to normal ;-)

As for the Thank you, after the site rework some time back it changed to simply updating the Thank You Received count and no longer displays the user who thanked.
Creating history....one edit at a time !

But, what does it all mean? I don't get what "Thank You" and "Karma" are supposed to do anyway. Why not just one "like" button? Or maybe that can be a third option?

It's just an extra special thank you, people click your plus or minus sign to award you karma.
You're up to 13 so you must have pleased some people.

It's all part of the new contagion where facebook style "approval" is spreading thru the web, so much so that many unfortunate souls value their self worth by how many "likes, clicks, pokes, followers or so-called friend's they have.

But where are those "friends" when you really need them? somewhere three proxies deep behind an encrypted firewall...

Minus karma? Really? How do I have so many thank yous, so many private emails thanking me for help I've given here, but still have negative 12 karma? That seems sort of contradictory. Like the two systems compete with each other and make no sense. A simple "Like" is all we need. Or simply the "Thank You". What is the point of negative karma, but to cause more drama? Honestly, what is the point? If someone gives me negative karma, and I have no clue who or why, how am I supposed to see that as a useful tool?

The Karma feature should be the same as the 'Reputation' on other Forums. Members can add or decrease another's reputation. It has nothing to do with the "Thank You" feature.

So you might have received 12 thank you but at the same time you might have received some bad Karma from other users.

Maybe the way your post come across. For example a person might get some bad Karma by pushing your opinion as being correct answer or just acting as fanboy. This can happen.

It is a good feature I am for it.

Or someone can just flame you with it. How do you know WHY someone gave you bad karma? You don't. So, where's its actual purpose, besides to flame folks?

Um, why not just post back you don't understand someone, rather than rank karma that lends no constructive purpose. What is the constructive purpose? So someone can show they're anger? Really? We need that on a forum? Seriously?

I guess clicking a button is replacing an intelligent conversation.

I'm beginning to think Ben has a point about the negative button. This forum wouldn't allow members attacking each other, yet this is a subtle form of that. Encouragement is a creative's lifeblood, sure would be wonderful for FCP.co to be an oasis from the world of sniping & character assassination, so much of which contaminates & infests the web.

Or as well put by the Jack Nicholson character in Mars Attacks "Can't we all just get along?!"

Yes we should all get on together, so if you have a low karma you might have rubbed some people up the wrong way.

Karma was introduced as an alternative to deleting or censoring posts. If you don't like it, the board can have heavier moderation.

So Peter, how do I know who didn't like me on what specific post? For all I know someone simply got ticked off or jealous and attacked me.

How does this stop someone from posting inappropriate content, exactly? Cause the karma number gets effected? Does anyone really pay attention to karma? Does my negative karma mean I should leave the forums cause no one likes me?

"Thank You" I can see having a positive use only if we knew what we were being thanked for, which we aren't.

Same for karma. If I don't know who or why I got it, what's the point? Just a politically correct way of allowing personal attacks, as far as I'm concerned.

Like airing out someone's dirty laundry, but the person doing the airing can remain anonymous and protected, and the laundry owner has no idea why it is happening. And the majority of readers here don't even know why it is there or care about it.

How does Karma make sense, again?

This is off topic (at least it's in the right forum), but how do I get all those cool little icons underneath your karma? I'm sure there's an easy solution here somewhere, but I'm not sure what to search for or what they're called. Is there also a Twitter one? Thanks

Not trying offend you in anyway, but I have read some your replies on other threads here.
There is a possibility you have received bad karma on certain replies.

I think the Karma rating as on other boards is a good feature. The question is anybody real following it?

Oh I'm sure people have clicked the minus button for me, but I'm the bad guy here trying to keep everybody in shape, so it is expected.

I don't think people are just clicking it to rank people down, I think they use it as a sort of polite way of telling people they like or don't like a poster's attitude.

The whole idea is that everybody should play nice, but with a growing board that is becoming difficult.

I think the rules might have to be tightened up slightly on postings and I'll look at that in the new year, along with the possibility of appointing a few moderators.
