Hi Everyone,

In the spirit of the new years, and new beginnings, it would be so helpful to have a once a month 1 hour or so, skype/google hangout session with folks in the now, where questions can be asked live, a sort of talk through, there is nothing like this out there in interweb-ville.

I have questions, and I cannot afford at this point to spend $25 for 50 min on a leading-light in the industry clips, sorry, $25 is a whack of my income here in Africa.

I would love to quiz editors on how to do a certain feature, I am really hoping in 2014 to get backj into television news editing, I am working hard to find a better way to work, to find out from others, hints and tips would be so helpful. using the fingers, typing as fast as I can, cannot get the message across as well as video can, is this possible??

I really hope it is, I am so excited about FCP X, just did a 3min test edit in FCP X 10.1, and how anyone can say it is not the best, they have yet to use FCP X 10.1, no more clip collisions, just that is worth $1000, let alone the other features.

I do need help with color correcting a timeline, is there a better, make that a more efficient method than manually going through 200 clips, as Larry is right, digital is over 100%, to sit and manually adjust 100 or more clips, a lifetime of frustration....

Any ideas? Thoughts??
Thanks
Justine

Regarding color correcting timeline clips....generally this is done clip by clip to get the best result as each clip likely has different raw exposure, saturation, etc. settings. But if you find the scenes are extremely similar and a color grade on one clip will work for others, you can simply copy the corrected clip and then highlight any number of other clips in the timeline and "Paste Attributes", choosing color in the attributes dialog box. This will provide that correction to all the other clips. You may have to go through the clips that had the applied correction to see if they need any minor tweaking, but they will be corrected as per the first clip you copied from.

Another way you can quickly correct a second clip is to use MATCH COLOR. This will allow you to choose only 1 clip whose color you wish to match and apply it to another clip. This cannot be applied to multiple clips. In my experience with this feature, it works fairly well on simple scenes (head shots, minimal movement, etc.), but not always what you want on complex clips.

A note of caution with 10.1 - It has been identified that the color correction panel when using MATCH COLOR on clips does not retain the parameters once the UI is closed then reopened.
Creating history....one edit at a time !

Hi Justine,

A very happy new year to you, and may your wish of getting back into news editing come true.

Dan has given excellent advice about the color correction feature. I just wanted to add that the issue regarding the color GUI not updating when you use Match Color is not a new bug in 10.1, it's been there all the time. If most of your clips only need some minor general tweaking (increased contrast or so...) then the Paste Attributes feature will indeed allow you to paste the same correction onto all your clips in one single action.

As to your request for a question-based session: there are a few people who hold regular FCPX live podcasts where people can ask questions while the podcast runs.

Pixel Corps has regular live podcasts featuring Mark Spencer and Steve Martin: www.pixelcorps.com/live/

Bill Davis also has a regular FCPX live podcast for beginners, where questions can be asked via the chat options in the live stream: new.livestream.com/accounts/5442265/events/2524579

And you can always ask any questions you like on the FCPX forum here. As long as you post real questions and not rants people will be very happy to help you ;)

There are also free "Adjustment Layer" plugins all over that will allow you to apply effects to a whole string of clips at once.

As for online sessions, my own Louisiana Cajun Cutters FCPUG will be moving our monthly meetings to an online live broadcast soon. Hope to be up and running by February.
