Exporting Chapter Markers (X-Type List in 10.3... anyone?!) 22 Nov 2016 14:45 #83095

Hello all... long time lurker, first time poster (that I remember at least). I edit hundreds of videos per year in FCP... mostly weddings, but lots of corporate stuff too.

Anyway... I used to use X-Type list to export chapter markers, a great program Andreas created for us all. Since Compressor won't recognize chapter markers in m4v files, it was my way of getting a quick chapter marker text file. But since 10.3 was updated, X-Type list won't work anymore! I tried to email Andreas but he hasn't responded. Even offered him a nice cash 'reward' for him to update it to work with 10.3.

Anyone have any luck exporting chapter markers to a text file another way?

Thanks for any input in advance!!

I thought I'd seen a way to export the Marker List from FCPX in recent months. But I can not find any way to do it while in the app, and I do not find any posts on-line of how to do this.

I want to put the exported list into a spreadsheet. Can it be done?

Thanks!

Hey Joe,

For my needs I found I could export to a .mov file with similar bit rate settings to get the same results of an .m4v file (with the resulting video being roughly the same size) and that solved my issue. Compressor can read chapter markers from a .mov.

But in all of my research, I did find some instances where it's possible to export the chapter markers for use in a text file or spreadsheet. Not sure if the result of this method will help you or not, but I do remember this (pay attention to exporting an xml file from FCPX... seems there's be a way to find the chapters in that):

www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/how_...from_final_cut_pro_x

Then there's this one using Handbrake:

handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/advanced/chapter-markers.html

Hope these links help to get you on the right track!

For my needs, I was able to find similar export settings for a .mov file, which Compressor recognizes, vs. an .m4v file.

It appears we are looking for different things. ::grin:: I missed the "chapter" part before the "marker" part in your first post.

I was looking for text export of Markers, not Chapter Markers. I wanted someone to be able to add a Marker in FCPX with a brief descriptor of the content of the presentation. Typing m, followed by another m gives me the text field into which i can enter a comment. In the Index List>Tags by the timeline, it will then show the Name and the Position (timing) of the Marker- this is the info I want to be able to export and then import that text into a spreadsheet.

This is what I interpreted when one of the recent FCPX updates was released, and what I thought I could do. I did have a fever when I was first reading about the update, so perhaps I dreamed a bit extra into the press release I read. ::yikes::

I hope we both can find what we're looking for. Ciao. Joel.

Ah... I see what you're trying to do now. I've never had to do that kind of thing, but I did find this thread about it. Maybe one of the apps within that thread will help?

Good luck! Hope you come up with a solution!

Sorry to chime in late,

Mostly cause of health reasons I can't afford the time to care about all the little free tools.

I've created a small basic replacement for X-Type List.
Same as before you have to enable UI control for the app in the Security pane in System Preferences.
In the app make your selection, click Select, and wait. At the end the clipboard is set to the result.

Joli... see Andreas' post below. I was able to open a project and, although I couldn't export a list of markers (was some kind of error), I was able to copy all of my markers from a project (over 70 markers) via a warning message the program gave me and was successfully able to copy them into an email or text document... with my notes for each marker! May help you out (and you may not get the warning message... I probably did something wrong).

Thank you Andreas! Hope your health is doing better. You'll be in my prayers.

Thank you, Andreas!

My experience with the new app is mixed. I did give my authorization to X-IndexList in the Sys Prefs>Privacy>Accessibility pane. I have FCPX open and the Project selected and then make my selections in X-IndexList and click on "Select". Most of the times i get an error dialog like this:

System Events got an error: Can’t get group 1 of group 1 of splitter group 1 of group 1 of splitter group 1 of group 1 of splitter group 1 of window 2 of application process "Final Cut Pro". Invalid index. (-1719)

"Export" is not offered as an option when this happens.

I've also tried "select all" of the project in the timeline, but get the same warning.

One time, out of dozens of attempts, Pastebot (clipboard manager) suddenly filled with the Marker names and times! These pasted perfectly into a Numbers document. Exactly what i was looking for! But i've not been able to again get the marker list export to work in any project.

I do appreciate your effort and do not have any expectations for you to figure this out, but man, it was exciting in that one moment to have it work!

Best wishes to you and to all those whose lives you touch.

Blessings. Joel.

The weirdest thing just happened. I just finished the post above and went back to X-IndexList and clicked on Select again and it just worked. No changes from how it had been set up in FCXP just moments before when it didn't work, but then it said "Processing row 1 of 13" and quickly continued through all the rows until Pastebot again showed that it had copied the new marker list.

Just for fun I clicked on Select again and the X-IndexList app froze while displaying "Processing row 1 of 13".

I'll experiment some more tomorrow, really a strange thing!

I know this has been a while but does this still work for 10.4.3 fCPX? I'm trying and i hit Select and i just here a 'bump' sound effect, and nothing is ever copied to my clipboard. i try and paste in a text file and nothing.
