The 3D Cinematic Title "Atmosphere" is not rendering.
I have added it to the Storyline and added simple text. When I move the playhead across it renders correctly.
On some occasions the actual text simply disappears from the clip, although the text is still present in the Inspector. If I change the text font, the text action moves correctly again.
However, when I render the movie, the clip plays but the title text does not render - i.e. a blank clip.
I have reset Preferences, turned off "Rendering in Background", Changed font sizes, all without effect.
OSX 10.12.6, FCP 10.3.4, MacPro 5,1, 32 GB RAM - no issues with speed or performance other than Title Rendering.
Some Motion Titles render correctly, but some do not.

Hello Sean, welcome to the forums!

Delete all render files for your project, then try rendering again. Does this help?

I'm with Ronny on this on.
Bet deleting the render files will work, however, there is also the possibility that you have either a non-Apple font that is not working properly or a corrupt font file. So you should make sure you are not using a 3rd party font. You can also replace your font file(s) with a fresh install. Try substituting a different standard Apple included font if you haven't yet. Since you are trying to use 3D text, font issues can crop up.

Hope this helps, Greg

Great suggestion, Greg.

Yes, there can be issues with using third-party fonts in 3D Text. Especially with free fonts that you can find on the internet. OTOH I have never had any issues with third-party fonts from any of our purchased font libraries. Here you see the "Atmosphere" 3D title used with an official version of the Univers LT font in FCP X. Renders and exports just fine, and no glitches during playback on a 2016 MacBook Pro with a 4K timeline:

So first thing to do is delete all render files and try rendering again. If this does not work and you are using a third-party font: replace the font by a standard one and see if this solves the issue.

Thank you both for your suggestions, unfortunately they did not resolve the situation.
I had previously deleted the rendering cashes without success, but did it again but to no avail.
I am not using any third party fonts but using the default fonts in the "Atmosphere " motion title.
I did try another font without success.
I also exported the video from my MacPro to my 2016 MacPro Laptop, removed the 3D "Atmosphere" Title clip and then re-inserted it in the Laptop. When I re-exported the file, it created a new MOV file, again without the Font/Title actually appearing in the clip.
The globe turns, but the font never appears.
If I make a simple clip with only the "Atmosphere" title with a text/title inserted - it renders fine upon export.
Lastly, if I make a small change to the font size in the title, the animation WITH text plays correctly, only as long as the background rendering (little white dots) is in operation. When that background rendering has stopped and I skim the clip, the text/title no longer appears. Change the font slightly again and it re-appears correctly while skimming - but only as long as background rendering is in operation.
When I turn off "Render in Background" in Preferences - it makes no difference - still does not render the text/title upon export
Having tried this with 2 completely different machines, this looks like a bug

To be qualified as a "bug" you need to be able to reproduce the same issue on different systems using the same configuration. I don't see this issue happening on exactly the same configuration as yours (2016 MBP, OS 10.12.6, FCP X 10.3.4).

It would be helpful if you could post a screenshot of your timeline so we can see if there are any other differences that could cause this issue to happen.

BTW: the little white dots have nothing to do with background rendering. They will appear whenever a part of your timeline needs to be rendered, no matter if background rendering is turned off or on. As has been said frequently, it's a good idea to leave background rendering turned OFF, especially when you are constantly modifying things on the timeline. This avoids creating tons of unnecessary render files each time you make a change.

Please post a screenshot of your timeline.

Thank you!

Attached below is the Timeline file showing "Atmosphere " in the first clip. It is followed by another motion title ("Drifting") which works perfectly.
The title text in "Atmosphere" disappears from the screen after about 2 seconds after the font size has been set.

The second attachment shows the Viewer and font settings corresponding to the same playhead position in the first screenshot - i.e. the text "Antarctica" clearly visible in the Textbox has disappeared from the screen.
Many thanks for your help and clarifications - most helpful

…OSX 10.12.6, FCP 10.3.4, MacPro 5,1, 32 GB RAM…

I can not offer a bullet-proof, scientific statistic, but I noticed frequently, the 'old cheese grinder' in some GPU configuration simply does not support all 3D-font effects.

I had the same issue with a Mac Pro 5.1 with custom Nvidia Titan black GPU and Nvidia web driver. Switching to OS X provided driver and restarting solved it for me.
