Can someone please answer this for me. Does 3DB audio gain need to be applied for exporting a ProRes file with 5.1, or only for export of MXF? I will be importing 6 mono tracks of a final mix, and then exporting a Prores 4444 XQ with 5.1, I was not sure if the audio will be affected like that of MXF export. Do I need to add 3DB after import to all 6 mono tracks in this case as well?

I'm not really sure what you're asking but I just mix the 5.1 sound and export it as is. I don't add 3db after export otherwise my sound would all be 3db louder for no reason. I don't mess with MXF. If I encode a Dolby Digital stream then I choose -31dbfs to disable dialog normalization which would otherwise add an undesirable "pumping" effect to the sound.

The instructions specify adding the +3db function during the import process of a 5.1 audio file. Not during export.

Thank you, Redifer and FCPX guru. I wanted to double check on adding the 3db on import BECAUSE I am not exporting to an MXF file like stated in the link. So I was not sure if this still applied on import if I am only exporting back out to a ProRes file with embedded 5.1. To clarify the final mix is coming from Protools, 6 mono tracks fully mixed and ready for theater in 5.1. No audio is in Final cut with the master edit now, all final audio will be imported. I was just curious if I still needed to add that 3db on import to all 6 tracks, or just import and export with no changes. Thank you kindly

Unfortunately not a lot of us here are sound engineers and can give you a good answer. I would love to pick the brain of whoever wrote that in their guide, though. It does seem to suggest that the MXF export automatically does a downmix attenuation. It doesn't really make any sense to me why it would do that, though. A google search also didn't turn up anything about it either.

I would defer to whatever came out of the Pro Tools session and not mess with their mix. You should check that the ProRes file isn't doing any weird auto attenuation by bringing the export back in and checking the levels against your original sound files. Last time I did this, I didn't notice any auto attenuation.
