After Mojave bye bye Quicktime 7 ... and the possibility to cut and save parts of videos without any extra Compression.

In FcpX you kinda can do that with "In/Out" while importing with everything issued from a camera but not with .mov, .mp4 ... etc Can't mark those clips in the import window. Or am I missing something.

so would there be an alternative to QuickTime 7 to do that ?

QTX can set a range and export, we use it daily. Just different buttons to press.

Importing a range in a clip is only possible with camera media, I don't understand for the life of me why that very odd limitation exists.

I think because camera media always uses a copy function so segments can be extracted. Suppose they could cobble something in software that will allow pulling a portion of the file while leaving the file in place.

there is LOSSLESSCUT (free) which mimics all the reference features of QT7

any other AVf-based app like QTX or FCPX (compressor) use "samrt rendering" (what adobe calls it). unaltered frames are just copied instead of re-compressed (only if in/out codec is the same of course). that's why prores media is the most fun to work with.

reference movies was a security risk and is not yet supported by AVf – it's more of a gimmick but might return as development progresses over time

Maybe I misunderstand your situation (am in a hurry to a birthday party!), but Spherico has an app that creates a virtual camera card. Would that work? Here's the URL for the pdf about it: www.spherico.com/filmtools/X-Files/VCC.pdf

Theoretically, YES that would solve your problem within the limitations that Andreas points out in the document. BUT - that program was developed many OS's (10.6) ago and I am not sure whether Andreas has updated that app for Mojave, or even other earlier releases.

lossless-cut is a nice attempt to, at least partially, compensate for the loss of QT7Pro.

the multicut feature is interesting, but selected segments can't be simply deleted with the backspace key.

that would have made the "merging" of the remaining segments a natural consequence.

when exporting the multiple selections with the merge option, you first get an export of ALL the selected elements, only then do you get the "merged" file popping up ... that could make a lot of files appearing on your desktop ( or elsewhere ).

frame advance is using the dot & comma keys instead of the arrow keys, the whole usual JKL experience is flawed because of the J only serving to slow down with no way to play in reverse.

and what are these final 3-digit numbers doing in place of the regular frames counter ?

so many little details that make experienced people cringe ... what a deception.

there is still potential here, but the ergonomics and the tools offered by QT7Pro are unbeatable.

and QTX with its compulsory re-encoding is a disaster.
created by a very different team than the people who were behind QT7.

 :(

I will not be updating beyond Mojave due to the loss of QT7 Pro. QTX just cannot compare. If I record a ton of games and have tons of clips I can easily combine them into one clip instead of a dozen before import without recompressing or altering the original encoding in any way. I can create a movie with a partial range without recording.

It's just too bad that Mojave's most annoying feature is telling me about all the stuff that won't work after Mojave. I wish there was a STFU button in macOS. Just tell me once and then STFU you don't need to tell me about the same app again and again.

Still works.

I'm a huge fan of www.ffworks.net

It provides a really nice GUI to make using ffmpeg easy.

You can easily join a bunch of clip without re-reencoding. (There is rudimentary trim start - end of each clip before joining which works, but is a bit slower to do).

It is indispensable and allow all kinds of conversions and en-rencoding if desired into different containers.

The license is really inexpensive and always provide updates.

Agree about ff-Works ( ex iFFmpeg ).

Using it every day to get rewrapped videos or to simple-edit /merge h.264 based files.
It has become a swiss knife of a new type. Still not as easy as QT7, but the GUI is well made.
And even if their ffmpeg version of ProRes is supposedly not very kosher, it just works.

ok folks there is a solution to induce FcpX treating video files as shooting cards... (have them in a Dmg won't work )

First create a "MockCard " folder
swing inside a "DCIM" folder (named exactly )
create inside "DCIM" folder inside a folder with your files

voilà...

Hey zzchu good call on FF Works. It's not as quick or easy as QT 7 (which I can just copy/paste with the keyboard) but it looks to be an indispensable conversion tool. Well worth my 22 American dollars.
