I’m creating an HD video in FCPX. It’s a combo of stills, new and old footage. Many of the older clips are standard definition, 654x480 pixels in MP4 format. I am happy to float these on a white background and in some cases I may have 2-3 on screen at a time.

When I import these, FCPX wants to increase the size to max height and the program goes into an endless rendering sequence.

I need to speed this up. Is there a way to convert these files to a more usable format before importing so I can work on them at normal speed?

1st thing, go into the Preferences, turn off Background Rendering, you don't need it really.
Then delete all of your current render files via the File menu, to slim things down, helps performance.

Directly, by default, all media is placed in a Timeline with the Spacial Conform set to Fit by default. You can select a clip, or several clips at once, and change that to Fill or None. I so wish we could set that that default was in the Preferences.
