10.4 very crashy on Sierra... my fault? 23 Jul 2019 14:59 #100543

I got a new vcersion its not 10.4.6. just 10.4

Project is so laggy no space bar start etc - is this because the Sierra is not so good with 10.4.

Roll back to older FCP or update OS?

In fact not sure you can even open a library in an older version of FCP if you started on a newer one!!!

Which version of Sierra? You can’t roll back an updated library.

What version of FCP? You shouldn’t be running 10.4.

Why whats wrong with it?

I already updated recently to Mojave. I dont like updating until the very last minute. Saves me headaches.

I think its mojave updating and indexing - my activity monitor was going crazy with spotlight re indexing and hence I think that is the issue.

Can't roll back an updated library but you can open one of the auto backed up versions of the library or export the project in a previous version of FC.

His symptom is "Project... laggy no space bar start". There is a known incompatibility with Chrome overloading the VideoToolBox framework and locking out FCPX making it laggy. He should verify he's not running Chrome.

I have seen cases where malfunctioning or stale Spotlight indexes cause problems. However simply rebuilding Spotlight indexes seemed to usually fix that. support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716

However it sounds like Cameron Jake had a "stuck indexing" problem which might reoccur even during a manual Spotlight rebuild. If so maybe the procedure discussed here might help:

www.technobezz.com/how-to-fix-spotlight-...g-issue-on-mac-os-x/

I'd also recommend running Disk Utility First Aid on all drives including the system volume. He also could double-check he has no FCPX media or libraries on exFAT or NTFS disk volumes, only HFS+ or APFS.

Updating to FCPX 10.4.6 is a good idea, also double-check he has the latest Apple Pro Video Formats installed. Starting with Mojave this is in System Preferences>Software Update.

Wow - so looks like its a Mojave issue.

I cannot install the latest Mojave because it wont install on my 2015 - MBP.

I cannot now open even open the library from 10.4 on the new 10.4.6 fcpx on mojave 10.4 because when it updates my library from the older version of fcpx it just crashes fcpx

- thats a weeks work gone maybe have to buy a new mac at this rate.

- Disk repair also crashes.

This - to the pedantic genius who asked me why I am running x y z and not a b c is why I don't update software every five minutes - nor does the enormous media company freelance work for either because it Fs work flow and can take down entire buildings or systems. They have around 1000 macs on Sierrra! because its not broken.

Got it working now on the demo mode and so far no crashes...
NO IDEA what I have done correctly ...

I do note on this demo there is grey'd out items in transitions and so on - even though some I own and some are standard fcpx ones - assume this is cut down demo version?

Or another fault to troubleshoot :) !

That's a bug in older version, and the demo version. They work; they just don't display correctly.

With Sierra with stuck in early versions. 2015 MBP can run Mojave. You have some other problems.

We're about to move out of Mojave, so maybe being four OSs old is not not the best proaction plan. Apple has few qualms about leaving systems behind.

Refering to the fx I assume/ thanks Tom - I think I will try and finish this edit with it now its working even though I can't see my transistions. I assume they come back when I buy this version for this machine right?

Also do you reckon I should re format the MAC OS - full clean install of oS and also the newest Mojave?

If you are rolling back may I ask please how and what your plan is and what fcpx you will run on?
