Can anyone help me in finding out what is the best format to convert a 45:00 min ute sermon to be able to play in FCPX 10.4.7 . I am using edit ready to convert the clip - I used clipwrap but that is now not compatible with Catalina.

I picked the wrong format - a 17.6 GB AVCHD file turned tin a 176.4 GB file.

If the original is AVCHD you shouldn’t need to convert anything, or is this the .mts file by itself?

I find it easier to edit & modify the video if I convert it.

Edit Ready is converting to ProRes, which is a much higher data rate. What would to you like to edit in?

I have got no idea - something that does not take a 17.6 GB file & turn it into a 176 GB file. hThis is why I am asking for help I have no idea.

You might try Handbrake.

You can achieve the same results you got with a ClipWrap rewrap by choosing Rewrap in the EditReady presets dropdown.

Just use the default EditReady conversion which is "rewrap". That will produce about the same size file, and the conversion is very fast. You have apparently picked a transcode option. You do not need that. Pick rewrap.

I'm with Tom here. We get MPEG-2 files from other TV stations, we use HandBreak to convert to H.264 to edit with. Great image quality, easy for the system to handle. Or rewrap, which is just as easy.

If your codec is AVCHD this almost always means H264 1080p, not 4k. Almost any Mac can edit 1080p H264 material without transcoding to optimized media, whether using an external utility or inside FCPX.

There is an issue with AVCHD such that you should never copy the .mts file out of the bundle and import using "leave files in place". This can cause excessive I/O rates, apparently due to FCPX dynamically re-wrapping each file upon each reference.

Given the AVCHD package you can import to the library with the copy option. Editing performance should be good. However I recommend re-wrapping (not transcoding) using EditReady, then importing those files using "leave files in place". This is extremely fast since nothing is transcoded, and gives easy Finder access to the files.

Reasons: (1) Without re-wrapping it is difficult to play the files inside an AVCHD using Finder. (2) Without external re-wrapping the only proper import option is copy to the library which swells the library size and can make managing that cumbersome.
