It started off as a simple little experiment, and it turned out so good I decided to take it a little more seriously and actually make a package out of this :). First little masterpiece that I'll be releasing and it will be a package of robots with tons of controls, pre-rendered animations for quick use, LITE proxy versions to animate with then switch/replace with the hi-res and render, sound effects from my library (internally made..) and I'm not sure what else yet but I should be done the package within a week or so tops. For now I really wanted to put this out for feedback, does it suck? Is it too much? I should be making around 5 robots, should I make more/less?

Cool preview video where I interact with the robots and I timelapsed the actual robot build so turned out pretty awesome so far for my skillsets :).

Stay tuned for more and feel free to offer feedback including being critical :).

actually I'm having an UFO-generator in the making ... seeing your cute bot stops my enthusiasm immediately! You are much, much better in sticking basic shapes together into something new and awesome good looking!!

... will try to steal adopt some of your procedures ... ;)

PS: as a child, you're main toy was LEGO, correct? .......

@ Karsten:

Thank you sir! Lego as a kid - not really actually, but yes anything I could build/destroy/rebuild, I did. Once I got on the computer and started Graphic Design (after x years being formally trained in the arts) a whole new world opened up. Happy you have a similar project re UFO's and I hope it inspires you vs kills enthusiasm (sorry!), shapes/putting stuff together is definitely tedious re fonts but I think you're well versed in this process so with practice and 'less is more' you should do great!

My shape build level/experience stems from the fact that I spent many years on and off with 3DStudioMax, Bryce, Daz, and a few others (which are WAY more complex that it makes Motion5 modeling both limiting, and easier in a sense). If M5 ever opens up the 3D elements even more I'll be a happy guy.

@Deyson:

Thank you!! Felt so silly filming myself talking to nothing and looking at my table hahaha.

Talking to nothing is how most feature films are made now :)

'similiar', 'cause the basic shape is stacks of circles ...
in the end, a drop down offers a range of UFOs, from Flying Saucer to X-files ..
less, less detailed as yours... but your making-of inspired me how to shape details ...

the easiest one (intentionally no details at all!) is the 'iFO' ... :

comes in 6 vibrant colors, incl rosé-gold .... :silly:

^ That's really cool - part 2 of this video I integrate the robots into random footage for tests and you just sparked a few ideas for me in turn so thank you :).

2D meets 3D is a really fun world - I developed a game a while back that needed some 3D to make it POP a bit more so I made an infographic about the process too - CHECK IT OUT HERE. Might be worth a look to help you and others a bit re perception of 3D (although you seem good to go, this should help others).

@Deyson - True, it's even stranger when it's literally 'just you' in the room lol.

Hey funny crazy, creator of robots. I've been away from the forum for a few days and what do I find? this joyful and colored invasion. You're infecting all, making us become children again or maybe we were still; we lived in the fiction of being adults. Basically I was expecting these things to you, so much so that I indicated your arrival on the forum with the title of an old Hit the Eagles "A New Kid in Town". Very well Norbz the second part will surely be fantastic. I've already bought some popcorn and put the coke in the fridge.

:)

Glad you like! I hope I am indeed infecting everybody with the 'BE A KID' bug. I suck at adulting, and there is a great old saying I think most here will relate to: "Those that get to be creative adults on a daily basis, are really the children, that made it".

Plus I'm still single/no kids so I get to be one myself haha.

Thanks for the nice comments Pielle.

PART 2 of 3 is ready:

This is just me testing the robots in various bits of footage and doing a quick skit in the beginning :). The actual bots and tutorials how to use them should be complete within the next few days.

Weeeeeee!

Wow, really fantastic as I thought. You just have to harmonize the lighting between the robot and the real world. The goal is around the corner for a lover of the lights like you. Bravo, chapeau !!

Thanks Pielle - it's definitely an artform to get both the lighting and the color grading/blurs/shadows/reflections etc to match in both worlds (I have a new found respect for trackers and frame by framing stuff too). To me it all still looks too unnatural because the quality of the robots are far greater than any footage I'll ever get so downsampling/adding noise etc. is also kinda new to me but I'm having fun learning to match stuff for sure.

These tests also gave me a good idea to put visual indicators on the lights in the rig so ppl can turn them on/off and see the lights placement easier in fcp vs m5. making it easier simulate.

Hi Norbz,

For added reality and a more natural look you can turn on Motion Blur in the Render drop down in the top right corner of the viewer. Then in the inspector for the Project Properties go to the Motion Blur Settings and lower the Shutter Angle to 180 degrees and raise the amount of samples to at least 16 samples (especially when you have fast moving parts like the spinning rotor blades, or when you move your model very fast in 3D space, raising the amount of samples yields better results). Adding motion blur and raising the amount of samples will increase render time, but it will look much better and integrate much better in your camera footage.
When you have turned on Motion Blur in the render drop down and saved your project, the motion blur will be applied to your 3D model in FCPX as well.

Thank you RJ.

A few of the clips I've done do have motion blurr applied to them and I wish I had the time to apply to all tests but it add's xxx% to the render time, had to let one render overnight - 13hrs for a 20second clip and i'm on a 12core with 48gigs of ram :(. I think end users would kill me if I included it in the published plugin haha.

Should be done with this package later today or tomorrow. The newest tests I do a much better job with the light placement and downsampling/adding some noise to the bots and grading both to fit better... This is a great little exercise actually to practice a lot of elements in one go.

Hahaha.
Yeah, rendering Moton Blur is certainly preventing you from working 24/7.

Five robots completed - I've just put them up on my site for purchase.

GOING TO GIVE AWAY FIVE COPIES RIGHT HERE TO THE FIRST 5 PPL THAT POST A REPLY UNDER THIS ONE.

Can't wait to see what others do with these!
