Alright I'm getting a new Mac Pro and my sole PCI card that I care about is an Intensity Pro. I need to replace it with an external option witch Blackmagic Design also makes:

www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/intensity/models/

So I ask (if anyone here has experience with these) why would anyone in their right mind choose the Extreme ($300) over the Shuttle w/ Thunderbolt ($240) or even the Shuttle w/ USB 3 ($200)? The Shuttles also have direct jacks and don't require a messy breakaway cable. The only advantage to the extreme I can see is that it's smaller. Any insight?

I had a TBolt shuttle and needed to get the ultrastudio express for the SDI inputs which is a similar build to the extreme. The aluminum build feels much sturdier. The advantage to the breakout cable is if any of the ports crap out you just get a new cable. But yeah it's ugly and messy.

The only functional difference is AES digital audio support on the extreme. You can get digital audio via the shuttle through HDMI. If you don't need that then there is really no reason to get the extreme.

Do you only use it for monitoring? The HDMI port on the new mac pro is set up for broadcast monitoring so you may not even need it unless you capture from tape.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on using the HDMI on the new Mac Pro for monitoring during the editing process but I use the Intensity as a capture device as well. Right now it also doubles as my monitoring device. I definitely don't need AES digital audio and yeah the extreme is nicer looking and I'd definitely get that if they were both the same price despite the breakout cable (which I already have on my Intensity Pro).

If you just want to capture via HDMI, the mini recorder at $145 is a steal. It gives both HDMI and SDI inputs. If you need the whole analog thing, the shuttle is a great deal. I have a nice Sony SVHS deck that needs a time based corrector to capture from. I haven't used analog inputs in a long time.

FWIW, the intensity pro card I had laying around I sold on ebay for $150 without the original box a month ago. I'd had it for five years, still worked great, but considering I sold it for $50 less than new means it holds it's value. Hopefully that can take some of the sting out of a new device.
