4 weeks after Finnish/English editor Ben Mercer came to talk about his work on this major movie during FCPX World at IBC, the World War II drama Unknown Soldier (Tuntematon Sotilas) has broken the opening weekend record at the Finnish box office, competing with the biggest international film productions in the world.

And we have a scoop for you. During his presentation at IBC, Ben surprised everyone in the room by suddenly rolling out a 12 metre long print from the movie’s final FCP X timeline!

He amazed the audience explaining in full detail how he used the powerful organization and search features in FCP X - which he calls “simply brilliant” - to quickly find his way in over 400 hours of footage from many different cameras. His presentation also included an impressive time-lapse of how he edits.

Besides being one of Europe’s most sought-after editors with almost two decades of work for numerous directors and production companies covering cinema, TV and advertising, Ben is a wonderful person and a great presenter. Nouch and I had a great time with him last year in Barcelona, sitting on our terrace for many late hours exchanging ideas about movie making in general and FCP X in particular over a glass (or two) of delicious Belgian beer.

As you will see in the video, Ben rarely talks about technology but rather focuses on the art of storytelling. And as a renowned visual storyteller he clearly explains why he finds that Final Cut Pro X is the best tool for all his work. I think you will enjoy his presentation:

The movie is now ready for international release. It will also be turned into a five-part television series, which will be edited with Final Cut Pro X.

If you would like to know more about the workflows he used cutting “Unknown Soldier”, check out this article we published last year. It also includes Ben’s longer presentations recorded during the FCPX Tours at IBC and Barcelona 2016.
