We are normally quite good at picking up articles from Apple as they are released, but we missed this one. Many thanks to the eagle eyed Marcin Zwolski for spotting this latest documentation and sending us the link.
Apple have announced they are going to natively support RED files in FCPX, but we don't know when an update will be released and how deep the suport will go. So what can you do with R3D media and FCPX today?
This white paper called RED Workflows with Final Cut Pro X details the methods of working with the files right now. As you would expect it relies heavily on converting them to ProRes first.
We are somewhat sad that this document has been published as it signals to us that whatever update for FCPX to handle the direct ingest of RED files won't be coming soon. Don't forget that Apple are presenting at Wednesday night's LAFCPUG meeting so we might know a bit more then.
