At last, true broadcast output! And if I set the Kona card to the same resolution I'm working with in FCP X, no latency at all, fantastic! Now for Apple to revive Color again! (Hey, a boy can dream, eh?)
AJA just updated their drivers for FCP X to 10.3.1. Use the NDD version unless you really do need the Macintosh Desktop feature. The non-NDD versions in the past have caused kernel panics on some towers.
But when I upgraded FCP X still didn't recognize that I had a Kona card (which is better than kernel panics at boot up). So here's what AJA tech support told me to do, and it worked. So in case you have an AJA device, here's the deal:
1) Delete the Kona preferences:
a) Go to Mac HD: /library/preferences/ and delete all the com.aja.* files.
b) Go to Mac HD: /users/username/library/preferences/ and delete all the com.aja.* files.
c) reboot.
2) Go to AJA control panel -> Control and set Format to YUV - 10.
3) Go to AJA control panel -> Format and set Primary to desired video preview format for FCP X
4) Launch FCP X.
5) From FCP X menu bar -> window : Make sure A/V output is checked.
6) Go to FCP X preferences and make sure A/V output is set to AJA Kona-LHi.
