The iPad can really do a lot for media production. Graphic apps are abundant and do a lot, including 3D modeling. Movie Slate will do slates, sync, notes, metadata, XML to your NLE. Other apps do storyboards, script writing/reviewing, project budgets, scheduling, etc. All of that has been fully functional on the iPad for some time now. And it all syncs to your Mac. But what about actually recording and editing the media itself?

Today I’ve seen too many GREAT add-on devices and professional apps that work with an iPad that I’m about to totally rethink how I use mine. Don’t we all want to use fewer devices to do more work in the field? Of course we do. The iPad is now coming into it’s own.

Here's my blog entry addressing several great products with links.

Has anyone found out a way to use an iPad as a monitor for HDSLR cameras ?

What I meant was having the iPad used as a field monitor that is directly connected to a HDSLR camera.

Many people use small external HDMI field monitors when recording video in the field with HDSLR cameras. Apps that control HDSLRs connected to a computer have been around for a while. The iPad, for the most part, is video out only. Some apps allow the iPad to be used as a shared monitor.

It would be nice if Apple allowed direct video into the iPad. One day!

Just bought that DSLR Camera Remote app - AMAZING. I wouldn't say it's good enough to check critical focus (at least not on my 1st gen iPad) or watch realtime playback. But for starting/stopping/checking framing - it's awesome. $25, can't beat that.

I have a mobile audio kit that I've been vary happy with for years. All recording went to my old MBP. I've wanted to dump it as it's bulky and awkward and heavy. With Auria now I only need a USB multiple I/O and I can dump the MBP. It'll be faster and easier to deal with. I've been recording and mixing with it this weekend, trying to master it. It's easy to learn, the owners manual is a really nice tutorial, and super easy to use and edit / mix with.

If you're shooting DSLR and have an iPad, use it to record your audio! Great I/O's with superior filters & converters, and the iPad Camera Kit gives you USB connectivity.

Not to mention there's a cheap in-app add on so Auria will play a video clip along with your recording / mixing. Very nice app. 48 tracks, fully professional quality, I'm blown away.

Not to mention the latest update to Avid Studio for the iPad. That's looking like it'll blow iMovie away in another 6-8 months if they keep growing it.

I don't get this. Do you first have to have the camera tethered to a laptop, and then you control it from the iPad?

If you have the camera tethered to a laptop then you can use the free EOS utility software to use the laptop as a monitor, and to remotely control the camera.

Well I can't carry a tethered laptop around with me. Today I was able to tweak the lighting of the scene, walking around with my iPad and not having to run back to the camera every 2 seconds.

And when my client arrived on set, I was able to hand him the iPad and tell him he can check the framing ;) He LOVED that.

Check out "Movie Slate" for iPad. It's FCPXML support allows you to take a ton of stuff into FCP X with you. It does notes, stills, audio notes, TC, all sorts of stuff.
