I am in the beginning of starting to transfer pictures and video taken from my 60D into FCPX. I see that there is a Canon plugin that helps in downloading media from the 60D.

Does anyone know if the Plugin-E1 will work with the latest Final Cut Pro X?
The site says "Final Cut Pro 7.0.2 and later". Would "... and later" only mean 7.X versions?

Just a question...

Correct, it's for 7.x versions. It does not work in FCP X, nor is it even needed. In legacy FCP it translated those H.264 files, that were already QT files, in to more readable ProRes files.

FCP X can read those H.264 QT files natively now. You just use Import > Files, very simple.

Here's the rule of thumb:
If it's a QT ".mov" file, use Import Files.
If it's not a QT ".mov" file, use Import From Camera.

If it's like my 7D, computers don't read the card inside the camera itself, you need a card reader to access the actual files.

Thanks again Ben. I get it now. I'll just use a card reader like you said. I just wish I didn't have to go the extra step.

Well, that's a limitation of the camera, not FCP. Glad to be of help.

It turns out you can actually use the Camera Import window with the newest version of the EOS plugin and FCPX, but only with cameras that don't have .thm (thumbnail) files. That includes your 60D and the new 5D mkIII. It doesn't include the 7D however.

Also, as the Camera Import window still doesn't allow you to bring in much metadata from the camera (possibly a camera issue, I don't know how much metadata re: ISO, lens settings, etc is recorded with video files) there isn't really much point in using that vs. just using the file import window.

Hopefully DSLR (and other) camera makers will follow BlackMagic Design's lead and include huge amounts of metadata in their files going into FCPX. But probably the best way to convince them to do that is to have BMD sell 50 gazillion cameras.

Best!

The general rule of thumb is, if it's .mov files, Import as Files. If not, use Import From Camera. FCP X isn't generating any timecode for those DSLR files that they don't already have. Canon's cameras are not storing EXIF data in their QT files yet.
