The editor I'm collaborating with has suddenly started getting this message whenever he fires up FCP X. It claims his system drive is a SAN location and in use. It then won't let him do anything with his existing projects even though they are on an external drive.

We've tried all the usual things to fix it to no avail. Anyone here have a suggestion on how to fix this annoying problem?

System is Mac Pro 10.7.4, 8GB Ram Projects and Events on separate FW800 Drives.
Have trashed prefs, restarted, etc.

I'd run Disk Warrior right away. Something about the drive isn't registering with the system properly. Not a good sign, possibly.

I'd just personally be worried if a FW drive suddenly was being seen as a SAN drive. Those things don't "just happen", as you know. I'd start by verifying free space and it's permission settings, then Disk Utility to repair it. Although DU rarely actually fixes anything of significance. But yeah, Disk Warrior for good measure.

I've had this problem twice on different eSata volumes. Ran DW as I didn't know what else to do.

Saw on the apple forum Ben linked about resetting PRAM. Don't know how/why that would work but no harm in trying. Haven't done it a while anyway.

Definitely a BUG in X!

Actually, when it happens, no volumes mount (thus no events or projects). Here's a screen shot from the last occurrence. The volumes it is referring to are the system drive (using the nickname and then oddly full name names). Weird, right?

"I" personally NEVER advise resetting PRAM. On today's Macs that almost never fixes anything. Just for the record...

Can you go to the File menu and disconnect that "Location"? I'm guessing now, but would be interesting to see if FCP let you.

If I recall, the option to disconnect was greyed out (although the option to create a new SAN was possible). I believe the solution was force quite, reboot, DW.

I mean, is it even possible for the internal system drive to be a SAN location? Isn't that loco?

I have my own word for it, but yes, "loco" is much more socially acceptable.

Yes well that's exactly what's happening. FCP X things the internal drive is a SAN location and is already in use by the user. Bizarre. We'll have a go today at fixing it and see how we go.

I got in touch with Apple about this issue. One possible cause: a mounted DMG, like from a third party installer, can sometime cause the SAN location error message. Something to be aware of...

This is true, and it can also be cause buy mounted sparse images. Kinda sucks if you are using them for FCPX.

After reading about mounted DMG files potentially being the issue I checked to see if I had any. I didn't but i did have an external USB hard drive that i wasn't using for my work at the time attached. I ejected it and it seems to have been the culprit. Now, everything seems to be working perfectly well :)
