TOPIC: H.265 ON THE WAY

H.265 ON THE WAY 17 Aug 2012 15:24 #13177

Just one of the articles from a few days ago about the MPEG Associations draft standard for h.265.

www.appleinsider.com/articles/12/08/15/m...quality_by_2013.html

Though I'm sure h.265 will find it's way into DSLR type cameras for acquisition, I'm more interested in it's primary use as a distribution codec.

As a big AppleTV proponent, the prospects for delivering 1080p content at half the current file size (5GB), or conversely double the image quality at existing file sizes, is very exciting.

Potentially, it even opens the door for downloadable 4K file sizes by the time consumer sets come to market in 3-5 years.

Marcus,

In the meantime, are you hip to the x.264 alternative?

"Since 100% of what I do goes to the web, encoding quality and file size is a big deal to me. My recent tests with the open source x264 QT Component have been pretty impressive--same or better quality of H.264 with almost half the file size. I've used it with QT 7 and Compressor 3.5.3 on exported Pro Res 422 files from FCP X and ScreenFlow 3."

"x264 forms the core of many web video services, such as Youtube, Facebook, Vimeo, and Hulu. It is widely used in television broadcast and by ISPs."
