Hi guys,
I have an existing event and project of FCPX on external hard-drive A. It was running slowly, so I just bought a new faster drive B (WD My Book ii, RAID 0) and want to 'duplicate project with referenced events' to the new drive B and work off that. When I tried this, I checked the 'include render files'. When I now try to connect the new drive B, the event begins to load, long enough to see the project appear with heaps of red squares in place of the pictures with the yellow triangle sign with an exclamation mark on it saying 'Modified Files'.
The Inspector box says: 279 clips in use. 175 modified files (in yellow).
Then, before it loads completely, it crashes. Repeatedly.
So I can't even load FCPX on my new drive without it crashing.
I've tried to read a few forums and have a hunch it might be something to do with the synced files. I had to sync all my audio and visual files, as they were recorded separately. Does this mean that FCPX cannot 'duplicate' synced files? Could this be causing the crash?
Any help would be welcomed as I am tearing my hair out....
Cheers

Are you copying in the Finder or inside of FCP X?

First, inside FCP X, "Consolidate" the Events (File menu). Then duplicate the "Project" and tell FCP to include all referenced Events.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for taking the time to look into this. I copied the project in FCPX, as mentioned. So I opted for 'duplicate project with related event' and checked the include render files box.
So, you think I need to consolidate the event first? What does this do exactly? I can't seem to find a basic explanation anywhere. Will that mean that my synced files will be recognized?
I have not by any means finished editing, I have basically just started editing this project, but need to duplicate it to a newer, faster drive for a faster edit.
Is 'consolidating' going to mess with future editing of this project? As I am not just wanting to archive a finished project.
Just to get this right, you think I should consolidate the event and then 'duplicate project with related event' and checked the include render files box. Correct?
Thanks!

I had something similar, but much more weird happen to me.

I edited a short film this summer and when I finished editing it everything played back fine, I was able to export it to quicktime with all the audio and video files playing back with no issues. Then I exported the XML so I could create an aaf file in XtoPro to send to protools. When I processed the XML file it said 101 of 200 clips could not be found. So I had it relink the files and it was able to do that for all but 40. The remaining 40 files would never work and I would get an error message stating that it wasn't the right media or the files weren't long enough (these were all synced clips).

The weird thing is that I never saw the red relink media clips, I could always watch the video all the way through with no issues. I just ended up re-importing, re-syncing and replacing those 40 clips on the timeline.

I have no idea what happened but it seems really weird and kind of similar to this other issue here.

At one point early on in the process (before I even created a project), I moved the media off my internal iMac drive and onto a larger external thunderbolt drive.

Consolidating an Event simply makes sure all media is inside the Event folder and not pointed to with links.

Hi again Ben,
My current event is on a 3TB drive of which 2.06TB is a folder of original media. The 'original media' folder within the event is full of alias' pointing to the folder of original media. There are only 800GB left on the drive. If I 'consolidate', does that not mean that FCPX will create a copy of all the original media files within the event, which means there is actually not enough room on the drive?
When I tried to duplicate project and related events onto my new drive, it created an 'original media' folder and copied all the media files into it, which I am afraid might happen if I consolidate the original event. Thoughts?
I'm not sure where FCPX actually stores the synced files - I can see them within FCPX but can't check they are there on my new drive, as I can't open FCPX without it crashing.
Guessing they will be coded in the 'render files' folder or something.
Cheers

Yes, "Organize Event Files" makes copies. It's more safe in case something goes wrong.

You could manually copy what you need to the portable drive. Just don't launch FCP X when both copies of the same Event available. "Event Manager X" helps with this sort of thing.
