This is slightly related to the recent post:
www.fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-x-fcpx/...fcp-vs-plugins#96181

There was pretty much the same thing as above on the German finalcutprofi site.
This caused some off-list discussions which included Resolve, QT Player X, CEA and VTT.
Especially what about colors and positions of CEA captions.

I spent more or less the whole day finding out interesting things.

Below some screen shots, all use the same scc subtitle file based on srt conversion and colors set in Resolve.

A. FCPX

B. Resolve

C. Published on the web

D. Published on the Web + VTT language file

Don't care about colors. FCP export was m4v, Resolve was ProRes QT.

A and B show the line break as set, C shows the line break as interpreted by the Web Player.
What you can't see is how the caption (CEA) are "jumping" around on the web while QT Player keeps them stable - though not in the right position.

D. Shows how you can add VTT tracks to the webpage which contains the video.

Next week I hopefully have back a faster landline DSL (currently as fast as about 1MBit - yes ONE). My mobile is faster but amount of data is limited.
I will upload the updated version of X-Title Caption Extract and the complete stuff shown above.

As said: last weekend we discussed the behaviour of SCC/CEA subtitled movies in different players.
One player we tried was the standard Web5 player which works in all modern browsers.
While WebVTT should be CEA-708 compatible and CEA-708 was developed WebVTT in mind the results look very different from Desktop QT Player X and WebVTT.
There is a little project with CEA captions in FCP you can download and play with.
www.spherico.com/filmtools/TitleExchange...ct/sampleProject.dmg
The webpage created with Caption Extract is
www.spherico.com/filmtools/TitleExchange...ampleProject/myMovie

To make the confusion complete here the YouTube version:

A future version of X-Title Caption Extract will have a better "bounding box control" - currently 10% horz, 5% vert fixed.

You can play with the project and use X-Title Export to test.
