Help me choose fast SSD external please? 02 Jul 2019 12:12 #100344

Sorry for re post I am very thick and stuck.

I use a Transcend External HD TS2TSJM300 5400rpm, connect and edit via Thunderbolt. On a Early 2015 Retina MBP.

I want one of the following - but my concern is none of them are Thunderbolt and thus I will be using USB 3 - which is very slow and thus defeating the objecft of gaining more speed right??

Option 1

Transcend Thunderbolt SSD same as what I have but is still SSD and Thunderbolt, so fast?

Transfer rate 10gb/s - which is a lie - and reviews are not good.

Option 2.

Samsung T5

NEVER use 5400rpm drives for editing video, way too slow, THAT is your problem right there.

A single SSD is slower than 7200rpm HHDs in a RAID.

USB 3 is plenty fast enough for editing, especially a RAID.

I have several of those, they work fine, the current price for a 1TB T5 is $178.

It is a bit less expensive (but not as small) to use a SATA SSD in a USB-C adapter case. But the main advantage is the 4TB size is available in the 2.5" SATA form factor but not yet for the smaller Samsung T5 or NVMe M.2 form factors.

Crucial MX500 ($109) www.amazon.com/dp/B07D2BHVBD

I think you mean the SSD is faster. I currently use a RAID with 7200rpm drives via Thunderbolt 2. They're OK. According to the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test app it is still slower than one of my SSD drives I use on my camera hooked up via USB 3. So I think I might get an SSD drive (internal with a USB 3 adapter, seems to be cheaper than an enclosed external) and just use it has an edit drive. I can't afford to get an 8TB SSD like my RAIDS but a 2TB will do since after the project is done I offload the library to storage anyway.

Now I'm just trying to decide on the brand and if I should enable TRIM to give it a longer usable life.
