If I delete files off of a separate drive (not main boot drive), the files obviously go in the trash folder but is that folder on the separate drive?

My quandary is that I deleted millions of files ion a drive I use for time machine but when it try to empty the trash it never completes - or I should say that after 24plus hours it was still attempting to delete.

If I erase the separate drive completely I.e. reformat, will it purge the files out of the trash?

Thanks.

"but is that folder on the separate drive?"

Yes, it is. In the current OS if you have multiple drives attached, and trash from more than one drive, they will be listed separately in Trash. If you unmount the drive it's trash goes with it.

Removing files from inside is fairly complex for the system, depending on the size of the storage and how far back the backups go.

Erase the drive and the trash is gone with it.
