First, a question from a new eGPU user: after hooking up a Blackmagic EGPU to my 2019 15” Macbook Pro, I have discovered that in the info box for “about FCPX, there is no “prefer eGPU’ option to check. On other applications on this laptop, such as Capture One Pro, the option is available. Likewise, Affinity Phot, After Effects, etc. Should it matter?

When running FCPX with the eGPU connected, it’s obvious the card is working. Playback of a busy 4K project in “Better Quality” is stunningly smooth. I’ve got more work to do before I realize more of what this eGPU can do. Regardless, it’s a welcome device. The way images in Capture One — an app that is GPU-reliant — redraw so much faster, is a welcome change. I have not run any tests using all the usual software. I know that’s good science, but it’s not my thing.

My point? I’m not sure, but I just wanted to share the joy of discovery. Be well, my fellow FCPX users.

In 10.4.8 the selection is made in the FCP playback preferences.

+1
Once updated to Catalina I have also seen an increased FCP performance adding to my iMac 2019 an eGPU ( Sapphire Vega 54 in Helios FX 550) . This is particularly true when color fcp corrections tools are used.

I got the 10.4.8 (and 10.4.7) and I am furious!

FCPX slow down with my system (13" Macbook Pro 2016, egpu Rx 580)
It is impossible to cut in a 4k timeline, it's sluggish,
I have to create proxies..
It wasn't like that in the 10.4.6,
which work using the egpu even in Play mode,
now the external card is used ONLY for render and export!!

Just for curiosity. Are you see differences if you select your internal GPU in playback preferences render/share GPU instead external GPU?

Just checked, no differences.
Looking better it seems no eGPU work neither in the Sharing mode (FCPX have a LITTLE rendering with internal GPU, the biggest part is done by cpu I suppose)
