Hi All

I've just upgraded my Mac and am trying to get a current project from my old Mac in FC express into the new set up but am struggling.

Its probably easy but I have exported it as a .mov file and as a FCE file but FCP will not import it.

Am I faced with having to start again or is there something I am missing?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers

You'll need the latest version of Final Cut Express, and it's going to be tricky. Legacy FCP writes an old version of XML files. FCP X writes the new FCPXML version. They are not compatible with each other, it's a very difficult translation to do.

There is a software utility called 7toX that will translate an FCP 6 or 7 version XML file to FCPXML for FCP X to open. I'm assuming it would handle Final Cut Express files. And I'm assuming FCE has an XML export function, too.

I've emailed Philip Hodgetts, co-author of the utility, about this and will post his reply as soon as I hear.

There is no XML out from FCE. The project would have to be opened by someone who has FCP and the media files and then exported as XML and then run through 7toX.

An exported FCE QuickTime movie using the default settings that match the FCE project should work in FCPX.

Thank you gents

Tom, how do I match the settings for a FCE QT file to those of FCP?

In FCE you should be able to use Command-E to export the Sequence in it's current codec and settings to a QT movie file. But that's one single baked in movie file, you lose your ability to edit it.

You may have to build the project from scratch if you don't have access to a Final Cut Pro 7 system.
