Hello FCPX users,

at the moment I'm working on a project that I edit on my macpro when I'm home, the other time I move my project and the events to my LaCie little big disk so I can edit it on my macbookpro when I'm traveling.

I use the option to move the project and select the option to move the project and the event. When I'm back home I do the same again. It really works great but it always takes a very long time to transfer the data because of the event which includes the optimized and the proxy media.

So it would be great to move the event only once to my external disk (copy/duplicate the event to my external HD) so that the event would coexist on both drives and that I would just have to move my project.

Is there a way of doing that?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

David

David, this is what I do.

When I start a new edit, I create a new event (on an external drive), and I always choose to transcode my media as optimised and proxy (I'll explain why in a sec).

Once transcoding has completed, I then copy only the following files to my MacBook Pro internal harddrive.

For example: Let's say the "new" Event is called Happy Days. On your external drive in the Final Cut Events folder, you'll have a folder called Happy Days. Within that folder will be the following folders and files.

See attached below.

The only files/folders that need to be copied over to your MacBook Pro internal HDD are:
  • CurrentVersion.fcpevent - file
  • Transcoded Media - folder, and you only need to copy the Proxy Media folder over.

FIY: The Transcoded Media should only be copied once to your MacBook Pro internal hard drive!

Now, let's say your at the office and working on your workstation, and you begin managing your media, like adding keywords or making selects using favorites. This information is constantly being stored in the CurrentVersion.fcpevent file, which is the only file that needs to be copied to your MacBook Pro, in order to continue working on that event on your laptop.

The reason I transcode to both optimised and proxy media, is that I only copy the proxy files to the laptop HDD due to file size. The other thing not to forget, is because you'll be only working with proxy media on your laptop, it's important not to forget to set the playback settings in your preferences to proxy, otherwise your media will show as being offline

So now your on you MacBook Pro, and you've added to your keywording or you've trimmed a few clips and your ready to move the event back to your office workstation machine. All you simply need to do is ONLY copy the CurrentVersion.fcpevent file from your MacBook Pro, back over to your office machine, which should have the external drive connected to it.

Before you attempt trying the above, do setup a text event so you can trial all this out first, this way you won't go stuffing up your current event

If you don't feel comfortable or feel you don't understand my explanation, PM and I'll try walk you through it :silly:

Yeah, copy it to the Firewire drive, and then just leave it there. Plug the drive into which ever Mac you want to use at that moment and go to work. Nothing wrong with that.

Copy it to your MacPro internal drive as a backup copy until you're finished.

Thanks a lot!

For general use I'll leave my projects and events on my external disk, for best performance I will copy only the proxy files to my MacBookPro's SSD.

Best regards !!!!

SSD is faster than FW, but it's also going to bog down if your projects and events get too big, because of it's limited bandwidth. It's also going to fill up fast due to it's very small size.
