Ok..I'm editing a video and I'm trying to use the Proxy Media because my laptop lags using the original. When I imported my filed I check "Create Proxy Media" and "Create Optimized Media" but when I go to preferences and choose "Use Proxy Media" I get this error. When I right click the file and click trancode media. The Proxy and Optimized options are greyed out

All help will be greatly appreciated

Looks the image link is fubared. It should be

images.creativecow.net/222184/screenshot...05-08at3.55.44pm.png

although my attempt to get it to display didn't work.

As for your issue... not sure. Wild guess: have you tried to re-connect your media on the off chance that FCPX doesn't know where it is supposed to be?

All your media are offline. Have you moved or renamed your original media folder or Event folder?

Th easiest way is to update FCP10 to the latest version (10.0.4) and use the Relink feature to reconnect your media to your Event. The update is free from the App Store.

Yea I just updated to 10.0.4 last night and tried the relink feature. I saw the path was looking for the files on my desktop so i changed the path to my external hard drive. Can you guys think of any other step i'm missing?

Do you mean you can not reconnect the clips in your Event Browser to the original clips on your external drive?

No I can but when I try to use proxy media all of my files become offline. I think its because the file path was set to the desktop instead of my external. I changed the path before work I just need to go home to check if X located the files..

You can't move your files once you do an import, that was mistake one.

The proxy media must be in the Event folder on the hard drive. You may not have actually made proxie media, or it was moved.

Switch to proxy media, then relink the media. If that won't let you do that, then you'll have to switch to Optimized media, and recreate the proxy media from scratch. But if you do that, be sure to find the proxy media you think you've already created and delete it.

Adding to what Ben says, in the future you should use the Move Events feature inside FCP10 to move any Events to another drive. This will preserve the links between your Event and its media. This little article explains how to move Events from one drive onto another:

A bit off topic, but another proxy question:
does anyone know how the link works between using proxy media and the export media function?

I once used the proxy media option for a small clip with animations in it. The original media was XDCAM, proxy media normally Prores Proxy.
When I exported in current settings, I had a Proxy Prores file. When I deselected the use proxy media option in the preferences, and then exported using current settings, I had a normal Prores movie.

Just think the documentation on Apple's part about the link between all these kinds of media is sometimes a bit poor. Maybe I did something wrong, but I just wanted to know if someone could clarify.

Yeah, the user manual is growing with the application. But that's how it works. When you set preferences to point to proxies, that's just what FCP does. When you set preferences to point to optimized/originals, that's exactly what it does. It only does what you tell it to do, and exports based on what you have it pointing to. It was a royal PITA back in legacy FCP versions, though. Way worse.

BenB, thanks for the confirmation.

I get that it uses Proxy media to play it back. I just think they should advertise it very clearly (which they don't) that if you ask FCP X to use proxy media, it also uses that for it's export. Pretty important fact, I would guess.

It is mentioned in a corner of the user manual. It is very well covered in the top training materials. They can't put every workflow detail into huge letters. Proper training for an application this complex and deep is pretty much a given.

But yeah, that's how it works.
