Dang, that truly is sad news. However, they'll give the code away, so hopefully someone will pick up the thread.

Yes sad news.

However when I upgraded to Lion I tried to clean the slate and only install those utilities if they became absolutely necessary. So far nearly a year later I haven't needed Perian.

I'm finding that things seem to be standardising out there in the wild.
Maybe it's the proliferation of iPads? Maybe they could see the writing on the wall?

Seanus, there still is a point in Perian. It happens oftentimes to me that students drop some clips of doubtful origins on my desk to be included into their projects, but can't import them. After installing Perian (in combination with MPEG Streamclip) on their machines, it works out in 99% of all cases.

No I agree it's been very useful. Just noticed that I haven't needed it nearly as much as I used to.

Yes this does suck but I have the same experience as Seanus did.

Me too, haven't actually used Perian in a couple of years. Anything questionable goes through Compressor into ProRes. But most of what I get to work with are the standard several camera proprietary codecs. All of which are easy to deal with.
