Cutting a series of mini docos for cinema.
All are set to music and thought track.

My initial thinking was to make the thought track the Primary Storyline as it drives both music and image.

Now this was working ok until I'm getting close to the finish and I want to start finessing the video. So I convert all of it into it's own storyline so I can juggle shots, trim cuts much more easily than I could if they remained as connected clips to the thought track.

This all works fairly well though there are some issues that I'm hoping can be fixed.
1. Wanting to do any kind of insert edit requires SELECTING the new storyline first. Otherwise you insert into the thought track audio.
2. There is no precision editor for Secondary Storylines? It only works for the Primary Storyline?
3. I can't seem to find a way of telling FCP X that I want to shift priority from one Storyline to another.

Any suggestions?

Either way I'm still blown away at how fast I can put things together with FCP X. It's mind boggling.

Woa I had a little conversation in here regarding this and the solution.
Now it's all gone this morning.

Anyway I'll summarise what happened.

Had to move all the thought track audio into it's own secondary storyline.
To do this I had to delete all the dissolves, lift the audio from the primary storyline and then create a new storyline and add back the dissolves.

Then I deleted all the dissolves from the video track and moved it down into the primary storyline. Happiness.

Didn't take too long and I've since submitted feedback to Apple that I think it would be great if you could designate a primary storyline rather than being stuck with just one.

@Seanus Forgive my ignorance but what is a thought track? Never heard that here in the States.
Creating history....one edit at a time !

"thought track audio", what is that?

If you only need one Primary Storyline, then use the one given. Why would you need to make something after the fact (a Secondary Storyline) suddenly the primary? I'm lost on this. Why not create a Compound Clip of the Primary Storyline, then you don't have to remove any dissolves or anything. I'm still not sure I understand what is going on in this process you describe.

Thought track is when you do an interview but only ever to use the sound.

The reason why it first went into the primary storyline as it is the easiest way of constructing the story.
Then attaching images that suit what is being said as connected clips. You can juggle the thoughts with connected vision to best tell the story. This is where FCP X blows the opposition away!

Putting the audio in a compound clip doesn't work as you will not be marrying the vision to the thoughts. i.e. they will not move together.

Once you have the construct in place then you want to switch the primary storyline focus to the vision so you can use things like the precision editor etc.

Anyway even with the little bit of juggling I had to do it was easily the best way of doing it.

Indeed, all my yesterday's conversations disappeared. A new form of the vanishing post syndrom?

You might have noticed we were offline for a while yesterday - we had to do a complete rebuild of the server OS, cPanel & CMS install - It is a long story, but yestrday's forum data was lost.
