So what do we think? I have to say I'm stunned about the Mac Pro. It's now clear that Apple sees no future with the model as it stands. No Thunderbolt or USB 3?

It's dead dead dead. Not to say that it won't be replaced but who in their right mind would buy one of these machines?

Other than that everything else was pretty much what was expected without any major surprises. Glad I didn't wake up at 3am to watch it.:silly:

Agreed. Sad about that. Makes me think that buying the iMac a few months ago was the right move. It's no substitute for 48GB of RAM, but with Thunderbolt I'm able to do what I need to do.

Somehow, though, I don't think the Pro model is dead dead. I can't imagine Apple not having one machine in this space and predict that something else is on the horizon. Has to be. Right?

David Pogue just wrote he spoke to an Apple exec who said drastically updated Mac Pro in early 2013.

Also it would appear the 17" MBP is EOL.

Apple needs to get out in front on this, though it may already be too late. They're simply not doing that. Completely underwhelming WWDC. Basically screwed the pooch on hardware and the pathetic new OS. Like they're all asleep at the wheel and haven't paid any attention to what's going on around them, or just don't care. It's sad really.

Personally I found the new OS X and iOS very impressive, and the retinal MBP impressive. What more was there to do? Besides a new tower?

What did you like in the new OS? Reminders? Looks really cheesy? iCloud syncing? Let's see how well that works. Messages? The beta's a complete dog.

Retina display is cool, if you're buying a new computer. Would you buy a new computer to get retina display? An MBP without FW800?

I'm on the road constantly. Having all my systems sync automatically is great. Especially as much as I use iWork daily and on the road. Yes, I use Reminders daily. I've been using Messages beta and have been loving it. I use Maps daily and love that it's much better. During seminars, classes, client meetings, etc, it's great I can trust that only the most important messages come through. There's tons to love about the new OS X and iOS to me personally.

I think the new retina MBP is really nice and answers some of my wishes. I'll be dumping my tower and 2007 17" MBP for it soon.

Yes, I personally found about all of it a boost to my personal and professional productivity.

FW800? There's a $30 T'bolt adapter for that. Another $30 adapter for T'bolt to Ethernet. Not an issue for me, personally.

I'm very happy with today's announcements. They may not be for everyone, but for me, they were great.

Again, what more was anyone expecting, besides some super tower? I'm not being flippant, I'm honestly curious what others were hoping for.

Well, there is a minor processor upgrade to the Mac Pro... but basically aside from that it is the same one I bought 6 months ago, including the ability to add 64GB ram (even though Apples website continued to say 32GB max).

If you haven't played with any of the 12 core Mac Pro's, I can tell you they are extremely fast, expandable, quiet and run pretty cool when loaded with SSD's. They are a HUGH jump up from any of the 8 core MP's. They run FCPX, Motion and Compressor with blazing speed, and with those apps running simultaneously.

Maybe I am biased because I recently purchased and also aftermarket loaded one with top end SSD's and Crucial ram, but It is balls out the fastest, most reliable, efficient system I have ever had. If your experience with a mid 2010 MP 12 core is different, I'd be interested to know why?

Couldn't be bothered to put in Thunderbolt or USB3. That's a joke.

Have you monitored the CPU usage on that 12 core while editing in FCP X and working in Motion 5? Is it actually using all 12 cores? And if it is, how much of each core is being used?

Ben, is this the David Pogue piece that you saw?

"Many Apple observers also wonder if Apple thinks that desktop computers are dead, since not a word was said about the iMac and Mac Pro. An executive did assure me, however, that new models and new designs are under way, probably for release in 2013."

If so, I'm not sure that means a new MP but let's hope so. Doesn't specify when n 2013 either. In the meantime I'll continue to nurse my 4 year old MP through its encounters with FCPX. I wonder what I would do if it expired suddenly like its predecessor? I'd better form a cunning plan....

My Mac Pro will be 5 years old in September hopefully I can make the old girl last a few more months. Think I might call her Seabiscuit. ;)

Interesting that a complete redesign for the iMac and MacPro is suggested. The Mac Pro I can understand but the iMac?

"Update: A MacRumors reader writes in to share an email he received from Apple CEO Tim Cook after he asked about the future of the Mac Pro:

'Our pro customers are really important to us...don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year.'"

Interpret as you are able. I've no clue what this means.

Yes, all 12 cores fire up and respond as needed based on what's happening. Here's a screenshot of them during playback of a 1280 x 720 HD project. I should have done a screencast instead so you could see the lights bounce around, especially when passing thru clips with optical flow and slow motion.

I'd like to see FCP X specific benchmarks between that and a quad-core. Each core is hardly being touched there. Is the speed in the 12 cores, or in the SSD drives? I'd bet you're getting more speed out of the SSD drives than the cores. But only a good benchmark test could tell.

I know a new (before retina display) 17" MBP maxed out with T'bolt drive screamed when I edited on it. Blew the doors off of my Mac Pro.

Yeah I think the Macbook Pro was the only impressive thing which wasn't really all that impressive. It is thinner and has Retina display. But is that it?
The OSX nothing new here just revamp from with some extras from the last presentation...

I also think they should have brought or at least announced something on the Desktop side. Customers are not going to wait.

I thought the keynote was pretty good. Bumped up the airs with some power, the new MBP, iOS6 and Mountain Lion all look slick and adding some great features. Would have been cool to see a Mac Pro, but not having one announced put my mind at ease that I didn't jump for an iMac for no reason (an iMac, btw, that i'm extremely happy with for professional use)

All this talk of the Mac Pro being dead reminds me of back in 1997 when a very vocal group of people were crying that Apple was dead. Wonder how that turned out ;)
