VASH effect? I don't think you need Motion5. My understanding is that (at least in part) Motion is built into FCPX. Obviously you need Motion to build or modify templates beyond the rigged parameters. But not to use them.

replace edit only replaces video! Something isn't set up properly.
Be sure Linking is enabled in the Timeline window.
Be sure the Audio Patch Tabs are in place in the Timeline headers.
