We had a test screening of the mini docs I've been cutting today. Projected in a cinema off a Barco Cinema projector and with some shots I was shocked by how much banding I was seeing.

Went back to FCP X and found that all the shots showing the banding were ones which I had used the 'match colour' function on. Looking at the waveform you can clearly see the steps, it's like FCP X samples with fairly large increments. Removing the match and grading manually significantly reduced the amount of banding present.

I only used Match as quick solution before the screening but this could be a real trap if you're not aware of what it's doing. Use with caution.

Please fill out the feedback form and tell Apple! That is significant!

Personally I don't use match color that often as the results generally aren't good for me. As they don't come close to matching. It works sometimes. But more often than not it's faster to manually do it myself.

On the matching note, I wish that Apple would bring back the eye dropper, either for white balance, or in regards to match color, the color match dropper for individual highlight, mids, and shadows. This always worked like a charm for me to matchup clips.

Color pickers of some sort would be nice. I must though the match color functions works much better for me, at least with the media I've used, than the match hue function in the previous versions.

Footage is Canon XF rendering to ProRes. But you don't even need to render to see the issue. I'll post feedback.

Any chances you could post a small piece of the video somewhere. Thanks. Understand if you can't.

Can't post any video just yet. But here's a couple of screen grabs.

There is a lot going on in the match and maybe this is the problem. The banding is there but it's just making it a lot more obvious.

You sure that's right. The stair stepping looks much more pronounced in image marked manual.jpg. Pretty shot, but those sky gradients can be pesky.

Better yet, I'd like to see two more screen shots. One of this same clip/frame opened in QT Player 7. The other with scopes like this with nothing done to it at all. No corrections, nothing. Just to give a good baseline for comparison, eliminate anything pre-FCP.

Strange I don't know how that happened but the names got swapped somehow.

A manual white balance picker for the colour board is definitely something I'm missing vs the legacy 3way Color Corrector.

I have to say that after using it on a couple of jobs, I don't hate the colour board.
