Is there a more complex flash transition where you can control the brightness of the flash, so that it isn't a solid white flash all of the time?

There are several flash transitions that ship with FCPX, & lots of 3rd party flashes, most have a considerable level of control. Apply the flash transition to the clips you want, then select the transition, then view it in the inspector. You can change the color, duration, intensity, etc.

Hmm, funny, but I only have one 'Flash' transition, and it does not have any settings in the inspector. I also have tried fiddling with the "Fade to Colour" transition settings, but again, I can't get a white flash that doesn't turn the entire screen solid white for a duration of the transition.

Do you have any 3rd party flashes that you might be able to link me to?

I wouldn't say there are several that are supplied with FCPX. I believe one at the most gets installed with the app, the others are all third party. Search this site under the free plugins and templates and you should find quite a few more.

Ok thank you I had done a search for them before, but perhaps I missed them. I'll do a thorough check right now.

Only "Flicker Flash" and "Dip/Fade Transition"

All I am looking for is a simple white flash, that has a level of control for how bright it is!

I just made a change to the FCPX "Flash" transition to include the flash colour in the published parameters. Does this help?

Thanks for your color flash, I'll try it. As for my flash transition collection, I think they all came bundled with pay packages. I have a bunch of them. Was hoping I could click on the inspector & it would tell me who made each one, no such luck. One of my favorites is called Film Flash, I use that one from time to time. There are others I haven't tried yet.

Couldn't you also just use a Fade to Color transition, set the color to whichever one you wanted, then speed up the fade to mimic a flash?

But in their defense, Luca's have a multitude of adjustable parameters (too many to list)
