I wish I had the time to delve into Quartz Composer more. I'd love to do some custom work with it. Let me know what you find out about the installer, too. I'm very curious about how that works.

To be honest, I don't really have time to play with QC - there's loads of other stuff I ought to be doing!!! It's very addictive once you get into it though.

I should in all fairness point out foer anyone else following this discussion that FXFactory offers a very solid way of getting QC compositions into Motion 5 and hence making plug-ins for FCPX - in fact, most FXF plug-ins are made this way and I think wrapped in Motion as a final resort.

Of course, it's quite a big investment and you're more or less locked into the FXF business model if you go that way.

For anybody still interested in this I've managed to use CHV to produce a usable Motion Generator Template for FCPX that does quite a lot of cool bumping stuff, including scaling, zoom blur, speaker bulge and luminance bump.

You can easily set the BPM with the provided calibrated control and you can do some really interesting things with the bump profile using the many options available under the Interpolation pop-up and by using the Tension slider. See the video in my post above for an earlier version of this generator.

File Attachment:

File Name: TKYBumptastic.zip
File Size: 157 KB

But be warned this won't install in the usual way.

Here are the rather lengthy instructions:

Installation instructions:

The normal Templates structure does not work with this effect which has been made through Quartz Composer rather than directly in Motion 5.

You will need to download CHV Electronics CHV QC Integration FX 2.0.0, which is a free download available here:

www.chv-plugins.com/cms/Downloads/Downlo...hp?navanchor=1010004

Run the installer as instructed in the download. You will now be able to trial the various interesting effects available from CHV but you will need to activate them if you want to remove the watermark.

However this will enable you to use TKY Bumptastic (and any other Quartz Composer created effects I may share in the future). You just need to stick with it for a few more processes, sorry!

From the attached zip file you need to move the entire folder called TKY Bumptastic Generator into the following directory created by the CHV installer:

Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/ Final Cut Pro/Templates/Generators/CHV QC Integration FX

The other file in the attachment called TKY Bumptastic needs to be placed in the following folder also generated by CHV:

Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/CHV/QC-Integration-Generators

This is the master Quartz Composition which needs to be referenced by the Motion Template called TKY Bumptastic Generator, and installing it here will also make the effect available in FCP7 and Motion 4 which is a bonus.

Launch FCPX and you will find the new generator under CHV QC Integration FX under Bump and Grind and called TKY Bumptastic Generator.

You’ll notice there’s a watermark but otherwise the effect will work. If you want the watermark removed send me the code that you see in the top left hand corner of the watermark to:

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I will send you back an activation code. The final step (promise!) is that you need to launch the CHV Config application (use Spotlight to find it) and then copy and paste the activation code into the filed called My Serial Number.

The effect should now be unlocked and ready to use without the watermark when you next launch FCPX.

CHV Config should install itself directly in your Applications folder.

Great work! And a lot of work at that! Very impressive. I'm looking forward to playing around with this.

Hi Ben

Thanks for the tip about CHV. Took a while to get it working right (Christoph sent the wrong activation code at first which explained my registration difficulties).

I'm still not quite sure whether the activation process that I describe at the end will work perfectly so I'd be interested to hear how you or anyone else gets on.

Be warned it does feel quite sluggish. I built a version using FXFactory which was much, much more responsive. Not quite sure what the answer to that one is.

Thanks again for your help with this.
