Here's an FCPX Effect that gives you quite a lot of control over making an image reflection:

With controls for:

- Background selection;
- Reflection Opacity;
- Reflection Fade Position;
- Reflection Blur;
- Contrast, and contrast pivot for affecting reflection "punch";
- Scale, position and Y rotation of the primary image box;
- Left, right and top crop for primary image box.

As always, any suggestions for improvements appreciated.

Thanks for the great reflection effect. I appreciate your sharing. I have found a couple of issues with the effect. First, the effect will not play video in the window. Where the curser is on the video clip becomes the still picture the effect recognizes. Is there a way to get the video to play? Second, the effect will not work at all with stills. Only a totally black screen appears. Is there a way to use this effect with still images?

This effect is very good. One request. Could you create the effect so that it would allow you to define the background color? That feature would be a great addition. :cheer:

Yes, you're right there was a simple mistake that meant it wasn't working as intended - it's fixed now if you want to download it again.

I have also changed the controls so you can pick any colour as the background rather than just black and white.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the quick turnaround on the reflections effect. There still seems to be some issues. The ability to change the background color is not functioning. As I try to make a color change the effect only seems to allow white. Try and try the effect only allows white.

Video clips now play great in the window and scaling works great.

There is another problem using the effect with stills. Scaling the window results in the still being cropped while the window stays the same size. That is to say the window and still do not become larger and smaller in synchronization with each other. Also the reflection becomes banded when a certain amount of scaling is applied.

Hi Norm

Unfortunately I don't know what to suggest as I am not seeing any of these problems at this end. I can change the colour to anything I want using the color controls, stills seem to scale exactly as they should, and I see no banding.

I am really puzzled as to what might be going on, but here's the very latest version of the plug-in (which I have verified for all the points you have raised) just in case yours is not up-to-date.

In the most recent version I just downloaded the 'Background.Color' parameter may be published, but it also rigged to an unpublished widget: 'Background.White/Black'

The rig has priority, therefore forces the 'color' to be white.

I'm not getting any kind of scaling problem.

Norm, what Spatial Conform are you using with your source still and as a clip on the timeline?

The main timeline is set to 1920x1080. All clips are 1080P. The actual stills are 3648x2736 pixels at 72 DPI. All photos are JPG files. It would be great to be able to use the TKY Reflection Effect. Simon reportedly has had no problem using the effect. Makes me wonder what the FCPX or Mac differences may be. If the effect works on one system one would think it should work on other systems too.

Thanks Alex, I didn't spot that when I changed the color selection option.

I have now completely rebuilt this effect in case there was something else that I was missing.

I've also added in a couple of extra features including the ability to crop the bottom of the image as well as the other sides, and an option for a User specified background, as well as the ability to turn off the background altogether.

Apologies to anyone who's been having trouble with this effect - I had no idea it would prove so troublesome.

Dear Simon,
I' trying FCPX in trail mode to discover its potential and the new way to produce video.
To test it I'm trying to reproduce a video done with FCPexpress where I used a reflection filter.
So I found yours and I tried it.
I haven't been able to test because anytime I drag the effect icon over the movie, FCPX crashes.
I'm using FCPX .1 version (last) and your revised effect. (osx 10.7.1)
Please let me know what info you need to debug the issue.
