If I get some more time, I plan on adding an option for turning the images black & white in addition to the tint option, as I think this also works well as a design device.

you'r right Simon but please save your time, turning clip in B&W takes 2 seconds, so you did already miracles all the time for us, please let us some things to do ourself

Excellent effect - exactly what i was looking for, I did have a bit of a fiddle with the 3 way one in Motion (to try and learn) but only managed to change the background colour from green to black as a standard I will continue to try and learn Motion.

Simon , soon I ll post a video using your split screen effect, but I would like to do something not possible today.
Im using the layout with 3 little squares above and 1 rectangle below. I would to be able to freeze the videos in the squares above the main part (rectangle). I keyed the small parts so they enter in the screen one by one . That was easy. But I cant freeze any video while the "big"video is going below ...
Do you understand ?

I'm not sure what you are trying to do or how you are going about achieving it - how are you "freezing" your pictures?

Have you filled up all the source wells with new pictures or did you leave one of them as the original clip? I don't know whether this would cause a problem but it might.

I just wish to freeze the video in the end ...the video enters and then freezes ...cant do that , right ?

I could probably do you a control that enables a"hold" or freeze frame after a number of frames that you could control - would that be the answer?

Sadly, I spoke too soon, forgetting that it isn't possible to have retiming behaviors inside a Motion 5 Effect (Generators do allow this but that's another story and won't work here). So not possible to give you a "hold"/freeze option, as I see it.

I'll keep thinking to see if there's a way - but I can't see one yet, sorry:(

What about if you make the effect on the timeline then use the razor at the point where you want the shots "held" then "Modify" "Retime" "Hold" that last section.

But I cant edit clips that are introduced using the drop zones. The effect I want I can do manually but would be a time saver if I could use a template ...

another bad thing in FCP is that I cant blend many previously cut clips so I can use this new single clip as one clip in the split screen .

The solution to your problem is to use Compound Clips which would enable you to do everything you need, albeit with a few extra steps.

For each "box", make a compound clip of the same length with your clips edited exactly as you want them, including any freezes or other timing effects, and complete with any grading or other fancy stuff you want to add.

Then instead of selecting a single clip from the Browser (or the Timeline), select the relevant compound clip off the timeline. When you are done you can hide or delete the original compound clip - it might be better to hide it in case you want to go back and make changes.

I hope that makes sense - let me know if you have difficulties. I have tried it out and it works fine, and this would be the way I would work if using anything involving Drop Zones, mainly because I would want to be able to grade my pictures, but also for the reasons you have raised.
