Just a tiny bump, but apparently they are working on a total remake:
"With regards to the Mac Pro, we are in the process of what we call “completely rethinking the Mac Pro”. We’re working on it. We have a team working hard on it right now, and we want to architect it so that we can keep it fresh with regular improvements, and we’re committed to making it our highest-end, high-throughput desktop system, designed for our demanding pro customers.

As part of doing a new Mac Pro — it is, by definition, a modular system — we will be doing a pro display as well. Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that. We think it’s really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and that’ll take longer than this year to do."

Sounds great! It's funny, Apple tried the Mac Pro concept already back in 2000 with the beautiful G4 Cube, but like the new Mac Pro it was over priced and under powered. And they should have learned from that that the concept didn't work ;)
The new Mac Pro would have been a beautiful thing if it had been half the price and maybe basically a monitor-less iMac with beefed up graphics and more ports (i.e i7 processors instead of xeons etc)... Very excited to see what the next modular Mac Pro will be like!

(also they said new iMacs are coming this year)

I sure hope that Apple and OWC aren't the only vendors of parts for it. I wanna be able to upgrade it with standard PC video cards, not "Mac versions" of the same video card that cost way more. Not "Mac versions" of RAM that costs more. That was a dumb thing we had to do with the old Mac Pro.

This actually good news for me - I am not due to update my workstation until next year. I think Apple should just make a fully customizable Mac tower or outsource production of the pro to some who makes towers on a regular basis.

wow!
Have read just Gruber's article, which mentioned many statements aside a new 'cheese grinder', e.g. commitment to pro-software etc etc etc.

And, a comment about a future product … who would have thought of that.

The links are somehow scrambled, Karsten. Because they go over two lines, I assume?

So the problem wasn't with the design, people were just using it wrong.

They talk about it being modular... I kinda wish they make it rack mountable! like the servers they had...

You by the base 1U rack unit that contains CPU, ram, an SSD, intergrated graphics and basic ports.
You need better graphics? You by a graphics rack unit that can hold two standard PCI GPUs... need even more? Buy a second unit! (maybe a 2U for really massive cards?)

Need more storage? By the storage unit that holds 4 drives internally and 4 drives easily swappable from the front...

Need conectivity? Buy the Fiber optics, extra ethernet etc unit...

Make a nice Apple branded rack box to put them in for those who don't have other rack mounted equipment... But those of us who already have racks (all music studios to begin with) we can just put them in our existing racks!

This way, it would be both very usable for Pros of all kinds... AND the same machine in different configuration could be used as servers...

And it would be easily expandable by 3rd party units... Need DVD/CD/BlueRay? Buy a unit with two burners on the front!

Many audio interfaces and video interfaces are already rackmount units...
