Hello, I'm back to the drawing boards. Still trying to make a master file that my BlackMagic HyperDeck Shuttle 2 will playback with audio.
I'm trying to to make (with FCP 10.1) a QuickTime in ProRes 422 HQ with 16-channel audio. I thought I had it figured out: I used "roles" to create 16 mono channels. Unfortunately, this isn't *quite* the same as a file with 16-channel audio.
Thanks to my buddy Ryan, I have a system that works to play back a clip on the HyperDeck Shuttle 2 with audio, using FCPX. It involves an extra step using QT7, the only way we could figure out to get the audio right.
The first thing to do is create roles for 16 channels of audio in your project. I used subroles to minimize clutter. This is accomplished in Modify>Edit Roles
Then assign those roles to 16 different pieces of audio. I simply made a short slate at the head of the project. Select each clip, then Modify>Assign Roles
Then export your project as a multitrack quicktime. Make sure you're in ProRes 422HQ. File>Share>Master File, Settings>Roles As>Multitrack Quicktime
Then assign each of your channels in order 1-16. Note, you can save this configuration when you're done so you don't have to do this every time.
Next, you'll have to bring this file into QT7. I set my export to "Open With" QT7, so I'm ready for the next step.
In QT7, do File>Export>Movie to Quicktime Movie and hit the "Options" button. Then under "Sound", hit "Settings" then for "Channels" select "16 Discrete Channels".
The rest of the audio settings should be 24-bit and "Little Endian" checked
And again, your codec should be ProRes 422 HQ
Export your file and rename it "Capturexxxx" and your HyperDeck Shuttle will play it back with audio!
The reason for ProRes HQ is that's what the HyperDeck Shuttle reads/writes. It doesn't support any other flavors of ProRes.
Compressor 4.1 doesn't have the option for "Discrete Channels". I'm new to the NLE game, but I'm told that previous versions of Compressor supported that configuration. Apparently it was a shift with the "X" generation, because QT7 can do it, as can FCP7.
Luckily, QT7 is still available for me to do this conversion.
With digital deliverables finally gaining favorability over HDCAM SR for indies this is a much needed feature for compressor. I still have to deliver 4:3 pan and scan masters and it's going to be 2014 soon!
I'll have to explore Compressor not doing Discreet Channels. I have my doubts about it not being able to do that. I'm up to my ass in alligators finishing up a mPV project, but will check this out as soon as I can, and post back. In fact, drop me an email (address is in my profile) and that will help me remember and get to that sooner. I've yet to find anything missing in Compressor 4.1 so far. In fact, I've a series of articles coming out soon for the mPV HUB about it.
