Have recently been looking into improving the quality of audio in my work and came across some great tips for blending music and voice to get the levels right and the voice to stand out on its own. From my understanding this seems to work well..

For the Voice:
  • Lower Levels so it peaks around -6 and -8
  • Using a standard EQ drop off the bars UNDER 128

For the Music:
  • Lower Levels to between -16 and -20
  • Using a standard EQ make a small pocket around the 1k bar. (I lower 1k down two notches to -6 and lower each bar on either side down 1 notch to -3

This alone seems to really help my audio and because I want to do this all of the time, I want to make audio EQ presets so I can drag and drop these settings. I don't need the volume to be part of the preset as I know I will need to adjust that for each clip individually based on recording level/diversity of the clip, but even having a drop on filter for the EQ settings I use would be awesome!

Is this possible? How would I go about creating this?

Lastly, do you have any other tips/best practices for basic audio mixing?

Easy... apply and adjust filters and, with the clip selected, choose "Save Effects Preset" from the bottom right of the inspector. Select the parameters (specific effects, volume etc) you want to include, Make a new "custom" (or whatever) category, and save it. :-)

As to mixing... just make sure you can hear everything. Sounds glib, but that's your goal. Don't mix on headphones, and don't use the best speakers in the world. Mix on middle of the road speakers, and then check and fine tune on better monitors if you have 'em. One trick is - after you've got a mix that sounds good - to play the mix really really quietly. Like, almost inaudible. If you can hear the Dia/VO or whatever at a super low level, you're probably good. All about your ears. :-)
