Hi.

Sadly, Mpeg Streamclip no longer works under Sierra. Jumping through the OS hoops to manually install the MPEG2 component fails. Such a shame as this was a brilliantly simple and useful app for trimming out the bits and pieces one needed for their project without having to import / convert massive files.

FCPX amazingly still is incredibly clunky when it comes to quick trim 'n' convert operations for VOB files etc

All I need to do is to be able to grab this bit and that bit from various VOB's, large mp4 files etc for use in FCPX projects. iskysoft's video converter is horrible and has a very poor interface.

Isn't there a better / cheaper alternative out there?

Did you try locating / downloading tradownload.co/results/quicktimempeg2-dmg-mac.html ? Tom Wolsky sez you need that dmg installed in order for Streamclip to work in Sierra. Let us know your outcome.

The last version of MPEG Streamclip, offered free on Squared 5's website for MacOS and Windows, is a beta dated August 2012. Small wonder it doesn't work any longer for most of us. At MacUpdate.com there is a post from November, 2016, stating it still works in Sierra for that user but the interface is broken. Sierra has locked down the System Library unlike previous OS versions and installing the MPEG Component into the QT folder is said to no longer be possible. I do not know myself.

I found only two alternatives for MPEGSC. Neither is free, roughly US$50.00

The far away guys behind PAVTUBE & their many many clones have finally found a "serious" reason to advertise again their do-it-all-even-coffee converter ....

Sad the way Apple deprecated & crippled the QT framework after every OS update.
MPEGStreamclip is totally build on the QT7 architecture and this legacy player, especially under it's Pro version has been a fine workhorse when we needed simple extracts and/or conversions.
Now QT7Pro can't even read correctly h.264 files with a higher bitrate anymore. One other reason why for my part I'm still sticking to ElCap.
MPEGStreamclip was the turbocharged interface of QT7Pro ...

RIP now !

MPEG Streamclip works fine for me in Sierra. Don't use it for VOB or MPEG 2 though.

Just looked at my legacy applications and I have a copy of DVDxDV Pro (3.8.3). I cannot recall how much it cost me but it just now successfully extracted some VOB files into DV.

Doesn't look like it's been updated for several years.

$40.00
www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm

I have the QT MPEG component installed on my Sierra machine. MPEGSC says it can't find it. I assume that means StreamClip is now useless for me as a DVD ripper.

I use it to compress ProRes Quicktimes into h.264 .MP4 files.

Can't confirm this because I am not on Sierra, but you might try and see if Handbrake will rip DVD's under that OS.

This free giveaway ishappening at a Mac news site in the States:

9to5mac.com/2016/12/20/limited-time-give...and-macx-mediatrans/

We’d like to thank Digiarty, makers of MacX DVD Ripper Pro, for sponsoring 9to5Mac today. They’re offering a ‘Christmas Giveaway‘ of MacX DVD Ripper Pro starting now and running through January 5, 2017. There are just 1,000 copies available per day, so giddy-up!
Ripping DVDs with MacX DVD Ripper Pro is super easy. Just load the DVD on your Mac (external drives ARE supported ~$20 at Amazon), and tell it to rip. You can tweak the formatting to your desire or you can use one of its presets: the bundled options will rip copies tailor-made for all your Apple devices, including iPhone 7/7Plus, Apple TV, iPad mini, iPad Pro and more. Its engine allows you to choose whether to use some or all of the cores on your Mac, so you can prioritize speed if you like, or if you need to do something else during the rip you can reserve a couple of cores that won’t be impacted by MacX DVD Ripper Pro.
Digiarty also makes MacX MediaTrans, which allows you to transfer videos, photos, and music between your Mac and your iPhone or iPad. Good news: Digiarty is also offering a Christmas Giveaway of MacX MediaTrans this year. Just head on over and download your copy today.
These giveaways end on January 5, 2017, so don’t delay: go get your copies of MacX DVD Ripper Pro and MacX MediaTrans today!
Our sincere thanks to Digiarty for sponsoring 9to5Mac today.

Thanks everyone. The whole installing MPEG 2 component business does not work as far as getting Mpeg Streamclip happening under Sierra. It's dead in the water. I'll try the free promo just mentioned....

I am a longtime user of handbrake, but no, this is not the solution.
You can't go into handbrake and specify a 4 second clip from a 20 minute VOB file.
Mpeg Streamclip was perfect for very quickly, in one step, opening a big file, specifying an in and out point, specifying the video quality and bam, instant small file rather than importing a massive thing into FCPX.

I've just upgraded to Sierra. MPEG Streamclip was working before the upgrade. After upgrading it still runs and will happily work with all it's usual file types except anything that needs the MPEG2 component. But, like TJ7 I use it to cut little pieces out of VOBS or whole DVDs. So I dug around a little and found a fairly simple way to get it working. Apple have removed the QuickTime folder from the ~/Library/ folder. Which is where streamclip looks for the MPEG2.component. So to get streamclip to work with MPEG2 files, try the following.

Get a copy of the MPEG2.component - I already had it in /System/Library/QuickTime - So I just copied it

In finder use the Go to Folder option from the Go Menu and enter ~/Library/

In this folder make a new folder, Name it QuickTime

Put the Mpeg2.component inside the folder.

Try Streamclip

I loaded a few VOBs and exported short clips from them. Their are a couple of issues. The playhead doesn’t stay under the mouse pointer when you drag. You sometimes get visual glitches when dragging to find the point you want. This isn’t seen in the output.

I can’t say if this will work for all MPEG2 files you try. I tried a few and it worked.

Finally! The first version of Handbrake! I'm sure they could have called it 0.9.6 and nobody would have noticed. I wonder what qualifies this to be non-beta?

Doesn't work.

Mpeg Streamclip says:

"Your MPEG-2 Playback Component needs to be updated."

The video screen is blank when I choose "continue".

:(

Great, but again, you can't go into handbrake and specify a 4 second clip from a 20 minute VOB file.

Well, it works. Sort of.
HORRIBLE interface.
Fu^&ing QUITS when you use the "open with" facility of mac os X.
The ONLY way to open VOB files is to navigate to the folder and you HAVE to select the ENTIRE VIDEO_TS folder.
You can't just open one VOB file.
Sigh. It works, but what a tedious process to go through.
