I am having problems with the roll tool. I want to pull back the video from a shot over the previous shot but the roll tool doesn't do the whole thing. It leaves one frame of the previous shot. This causes a world of pain to remove. Is there something really obvious I am missing, maybe because I an AVID editor stuck in the wrong way of thinking with FCP?
Thanks for any help

Welcome Gary to fcp.co :)

maybe there IS a single frame?
sometimes, by heavy 'back 'n forth'-editing, the last frame of a clip 'survives' as a single, separate 'solo' clip.

zoom into timeline, of, faster, check in the clip Index …

What version are you using? Can you post a screenshot of the timeline area?

I have seen this, too. My workaround is to lift the clip I want to roll above the primary storyline (CMD+ALT+UP ARROW), roll it and put it on the primary again (CMD+ALT+DOWN ARROW). Then delete the leftover audio. But I agree it is really annoying.

" I want to pull back the video from a shot over the previous shot..."

The Roll tool should do this, even if you're trying to make a whole clip disappear. ONLY as long as you have enough "handle" on the clip you're trying to extend. Could it be the clip your extending is one frame short of having enough media (handle) to cover the other clip?

Thanks, Karsten, but I have been pretty diligent and there is no stray frame. It happens every time on any clips I try it on

Wow, that is some workaround! For such a common action, it is incredibly infuriating to have to do that, I agree. There MUST be a simple solution

I agree it SHOULD do this, but it doesn't1 It is not a handle problem either as I have been pretty careful about that and it fails on many different clips of various lengths

What's the frame rate of the media and the frame rate of the project? Primary or secondary storyline?

Trying to reproduce.

I can't reproduce it, works fine for me. What FCPX version and OS X version are you running, in addition to the other previous questions?
